As Keith Urban stares down the release of his 11th solo album, “HIGH,” he is clearly not a man bound by convention. His career, like the sizzling songs synonymous with his name, is a fluid soundscape embodying the grit and grace of human experience. For Urban, every album is a snapshot in time, a reflection of who he is, hinting at where he’s going next. His career mirrors a gallery of vivid portraits, some nearly identical, others wildly divergent, but all snapshots of a singular, ever-evolving artist.

In the Urban multiverse, each timeline offers a distinct variation reflecting the man behind the strings. There’s the sensitive balladeer, the charismatic live performer, the Aussie with an edge, the family man who loves nothing more than being present with his kin. “I’ve lived a lot of lives through my music,” Urban says of how he reconciles all the phases of his storied journey. “Every album is a blank canvas, but they’re also an accurate portrait of who I am at that moment. Between some albums, I haven’t changed much. But between others, I’ve changed radically.”

Urban shares his story with the gravitas of someone who’s truly lived myriad lives. For all his public personas, he saves his best self for his family. He and his wife Nicole Kidman are raising blossoming daughters Sunday Rose, 16, and Faith Margaret, 13, splitting their time between Nashville, Beverly Hills, Manhattan, and Sydney. They’re navigating extraordinary careers while making core family memories like reveling in the Paris Olympics — savoring moments of togetherness away from the spotlight. Despite the whirlwind of fame, it’s kicked back domestic downtime Urban cherishes most.

Country music is enjoying a peak cultural renaissance; once guarded by conservative core gatekeepers, it’s become a playground for artistic liberty and crossover experimentation. Beyoncé deep-diving her Texas roots, dabbling in the Southern Gothic, while Post Malone slides into the genre’s twangier tones in his Grand Ole Opry debut would’ve been unimaginable a decade ago. Urban attributes this to a post-pandemic hunger for real connection. “Country’s always had strong storytelling at its heart,” the industry veteran explains. “But it’s also about having a drink, a dance, and a damn good time. Audiences are craving that right now. Isolation made people want something that felt real; something with depth. Country was there, waiting.”

The Grammy Awards winner sees this as a broader cultural shift. “In an era of fake news, authentic storytelling becomes even more essential. Country is resonating with a much larger audience because it has a lot to say, and honestly, other genres may have less to say lately,” he says with a cheeky undertone. “It’s no surprise people are more than ready for it.”

He makes a compelling argument. Country now goes way beyond quaint ballads confined to rural America. It’s a global force, driven by artists like Morgan Wallen and Luke Combs, who’ve seamlessly married the heart-on-sleeve vulnerability of country with the sonic influence of hip-hop and pop.

Urban has been riding this wave of artistic freedom for years, embodying country heart with rock-and-pop edges long before it was trendy. Tracks like “Chuck Taylors” from his latest album strike up a delicate dance of soulful intimacy that meets unbridled energy, capturing both the fragility and stamina of young love. “That song took the longest of all songs on the album,” he explains. “Not in the writing but in the recording — essentially trying to balance caffeinated, insane, compulsive energy with very laid-back breeziness. Chill freneticism, yeah that.”

The paradox between primal passion and quixotic introspection is a microcosm of Urban’s broader approach to life. He blurs chaos and calm; the spaces where emotions collide and form something transcendent. It’s a sentiment that stretches across his discography, which often centers on themes of longing leading to catharsis. “I’ve always been drawn to those human feelings of hope, regret, the feeling of time slipping away,” he shares. “But I try not to hitch myself to the past.”

One of the major themes in Urban’s writing is connection. Whether it’s the nostalgia that seeps into songs or the electric camaraderie of collaborating with someone like Lainey Wilson, Urban seems forever drawn to the threads that tie artists together.

“Lainey? She’s got swagger for days,” he says about their new rowdy, rousing duet, “Go Home W U.” “We wrote it back in 2020 when bars went [dormant] and we were missing live good times. So, we just created that world ourselves,” he says. “I love Lainey’s voice; to hear her sing — you just know who she is. She can make herself at home anywhere, and that’s why people love her.”

Urban’s ease in any setting is part of what makes him such a magnetic performer. From Nashville staples to global sold-out arenas, he’s learned to read an audience, connecting on a visceral level. “It burns constantly,” he says of his passion for performing live. “It’s the center of my whole being — playing for people who just want to have a good time and sing along. When you’re on stage, revving up a sing-along chorus and the whole arena belts it back — a phenomenal feedback loop that still gives me chills.” For this rakish Scorpio, this exchange of energy is a blueprint for joy.

Auspiciously poetic timing for an artist whose songs strike at the heart of human connection — or maybe merely genius marketing — Urban’s upcoming Fontainebleau Las Vegas residency premieres on Valentine’s Day 2025. The newly built $3.7 billion palace of indulgence fuses high-gloss luxury and old-school Vegas allure, a fitting backdrop for celebrating a career of seamlessly shaking up tradition with innovation.

It’s as if Cupid himself curated the calendar. “Every show is a valentine for my audience,” he says with a laugh. “My mission is to take fans on a wild ride, leaving behind the everyday outside world for two hours to have the absolute time of their lives.” For Urban, the thrill of the moment reigns supreme — a reminder that connection with a new flame, a song, or a crowd is always the main event.

Urban’s shows at this architectural marvel will be a masterclass in musical alchemy — his high-octane stage presence igniting the venue’s leading-edge acoustics in an immersive scene. The Fontainebleau marries intimacy and grandeur in a style that feels custom-built for his brand of connection. Vegas is already iconic. Throw in thousands of fans, a stage built for spectacle, and a performer who works emotional nuance like Michelangelo works marble, and you have a love letter in concert form.

The 13-time CMA Award winner has shared the stage with a who’s who of the Hall of Fame, from Taylor Swift to Pink to the Rolling Stones. “I’m in it for the third thing,” Urban says with his Aussie timbre. “There’s what they do, there’s what I do, and then there’s that third thing that neither of us sees coming. With Pink, I always knew our voices would sound great together, but it was about finding that magical third thing.”

Magic seems to follow him into the late-night hours, inspiring some of his most evocative songwriting. “Messed Up As Me” taps into the mystique of those witching hours. The nocturnal realm holds a creative allure for the performer. “There’s something otherworldly about those hours. Intoxicating in every sense of the word,” he says with the deliberation of a man who’s spent many nights in its thrall. “You’re in this strange metaphysical space where anything can happen.”

In “Love Is Hard,” Urban explores the trenches of a relationship, where staying means everything. “My past has always been to cut and run,” Urban admits. “We live in this culture of instant gratification, but love? That’s the long game — perseverance. The more I’ve pushed through things I didn’t want to, the more I’ve grown.”

In “Break the Chain,” Urban reflects on his conscious effort to leave behind inherited habitual traps, patterns absorbed from childhood. “My parents did the best they could with what they were given. Now, it’s my responsibility to rewire myself for new experiences,” he explains. “We all come from somewhere we didn’t choose, right? But do I have the courage to stop perpetuating harmful patterns? While it’s not my fault my dad was an alcoholic, as an adult I can take accountability and learn to be in the world differently.”

Urban has written song after song about embracing the here and now; staying grounded in a world that moves at the speed of streaming and endless distractions. “It’s about finding intrigue in the moment you’re in,” he says.

Despite accolades and fame, Urban is tethered to the process, to the rawness of reinvention. As he puts it, “We’re all this mix of responsibility, gravitas, and wild edge. That’s what makes us human.” He knows relationships are complex and beautiful, and made a career out of turning emotional chaos into catharsis. One stadium-sized anthem at a time.

Tiger-Woods-and-Salt-Spray

In the realm of next-level golf embodied in enviable destinations, few names resonate with as much prestige as Tiger Woods. The legendary golfer’s evolution from indomitable champion to design visionary via his company TGR Designs is thrilling for golf aficionados. His latest courses to break ground—Marcella Club in Deer Valley, Park City, Utah, and Trout National – The Reserve in Vineland, New Jersey—promise provocative additions to the world of elite golf.

Woods’ involvement in Marcella goes beyond buzzy headlines—he’s as hands on as he is on a putter. “I was completely blown away by everything about Marcella,” Tiger Woods said on a recent site visit. “The amenities, commitment to excellence, not to mention maybe the best views I have ever seen on a golf course. I told the team this is the perfect canvas; we just need to make sure we live up to the challenge.”

Slated to open in 2025, the Marcella Club will feature an 18-hole championship course, marking Woods’ first mountain course. Situated within the exclusive Marcella Jordanelle Ridge and Marcella at Deer Valley communities, the course will engage golfers with strategic elements and sincerely spectacular scenery. Cody Winterton, division president of Raintree Investment Corporation, says, “Tiger’s focus and attention to detail is truly inspiring. It is an honor to have Tiger and his team in Utah working on this incredible project with us.”

Bryon Bell, president of TGR Design, shares with us exclusively, “Our goal is to utilize Tiger’s worldwide experience, limitless pursuit of excellence and love of golf to design a limited number of distinct, memorable golf courses that promote playability for all skill levels. Tiger is famous for setting a high standard and working hard to surpass it. TGR Design is no different.”

Conceiving a golf course in the dramatic Wasatch alpine terrain is no small feat. Spanning a staggering 8,000 yards, the course will be one of the longest in Utah. TGR aims to create a stamina-spiking, pleasurable course, reflecting Woods’ philosophy of blending beauty with tactical complexity.

“Because the Marcella Club course sits at an elevation of 7,300 ft, we expect the ball to travel 10 percent further than it would at lower elevation courses. While over 8,000 yards sounds long, it will actually play similar in length to other modern courses,” Bell elaborates. “Knowing the ball would travel further and potentially more offline at Marcella due to elevation, we focused on widening landing areas and green surrounds to keep the course playable.”

The high altitude adds a layer of complexity TGR embraced with enthusiasm. Thinner air affects ball flight, while rocky landscapes demand innovative solutions to encourage playability and aesthetic appeal. Such unique conditions allow TGR to push boundaries of golf architecture, creating a course as visually compelling as it is athletically challenging.

Few collaborations have sparked as much intrigue and anticipation as Tiger Woods and Mike Trout on Trout National – The Reserve. This members-only course in the 11-time MLB All-Star’s hometown promises sporting excellence in spades. TGR’s plans reveal a tantalizing glimpse into the future of this par-72 haven. Set to open in 2025, Trout National aims to join the ranks of the Mid-Atlantic’s prestige courses, aligning with the gold standard expected from a Woods-Trout partnership.

We can’t prospect TGR’s 2025 reveals without reflecting on the firm’s impressive inaugural project. El Cardonal at Diamante, the first course designed by Woods under his TGR Design, remains a striking testament to his acumen off the green. In the sensual landscape of Cabo San Lucas, we find a departure from traditional desert layouts prevalent in the region. Instead, Woods drew inspiration from old-school Southern California courses, challenging golfers to concept their way around, demanding power, precision, creativity. Wide fairways and varied topography delight, while strategic bunkering provides a true test for veterans of the sport.

Woods’ legacy is written all over Diamante according to Bell. He affirms, “Tiger is involved in every aspect of TGR Design’s projects, from setting the vision to laying out out the golf features on the ground during construction.” The Legacy Club at Diamante embodies Woods’ appetite for depth and intrigue. Fairways are generous, inviting bold play off the tee—yet the greens are where true course character is revealed. Each is uniquely contoured, requiring a deft touch and careful reading. In the Legacy Club, TGR meticulously captures the essence of timeless design, ensuring it lives up to its name in every measure.

Rounding out TGR’s contributions to Diamante is The Oasis Short Course, a par-3 as delightful as it is demanding. Shorter does not mean easier. This savvy design can turn a brief round into a breakthrough. Each hole presents a cryptic challenge, with intricate bunkering and water features. Sparking creativity in shot-making, it’s ideal for sharpening one’s short game. The Oasis doubles as a social space, where groups gather to enjoy the game in a convivial, scenic environment.

TGR Design leaves an indelible mark on golf architecture with The Hay at Pebble Beach. The transformation of this historic par-3 course into a dynamic gem showcases Woods’ golfing genius. Originally established by esteemed architect Peter Hay in 1957, The Hay is cherished by Pebble Beach devotees. TGR reimagines it as a modern marvel; the course now boasts nine par-3 holes, each delivering peak endorphins. Imbued with a sense of whimsy, the course features green complexes requiring strategy and shot-making skill. From the shortest hole, which measures a mere 47 yards, to the longest at 106 yards, The Hay is as beguiling as it is ingenious.

The centerpiece of The Hay is the replica of Pebble Beach’s famed seventh hole. This iconic par-3, renowned for stunning ocean views, is a nod to Woods’ respect for the game’s traditions. It offers a taste of the challenges faced by professionals in the U.S. Open, all within the more relaxed setting of a par-3 course.

TGR’s most paradisiacal coup can be found in the resplendent allure of The Playground at Jack’s Bay, Bahamas. Tracing the mesmerizing shoreline of Eleuthera, the course ranges from 71 to 163 yards, each hole presenting a myriad of shot scenarios. Woods’ vision is evident in every undulation and contour, ensuring the course is not merely a test of skill, but a celebration of the game’s purest joys. Jack’s Bay itself is a sprawling 1,200-acre resort club and residential community of natural wonders and built opulence.

As azure waves caress the shores and Bahamian breezes whisper through palms, The Playground is an oasis where the game’s heritage meets its future. Here, TGR has crafted a masterpiece for golfers to explore and experience the very pinnacle of tropical course elegance.

With such diverse locations, how does TGR ensure each course has a unique identity while maintaining Tiger Woods’ signature? Bell reflects, “With each course TGR Design creates, we try to use the existing topography and highlight the uniqueness of the property and its surroundings.” Ultimately, every Tiger Woods course is not merely a place to play, but a journey into the spellbinding sublime.

Inside Influential Prestige Private Clubs

In an increasingly detached digital world, a sense of common ground has never felt more profound. Members’ clubs succeed as a prime example of the affinity economy and its lingering place in American life. Whether under the guise of golf, yachting, skiing or equestrian, members-only clubs give us a meaningful “third place” to invest in our social capital. Bonus points for convivial clubhouses and enviable lifestyles.

Private clubs remain a sharp validation of the social sanctuaries they provide. Suddenly, an inner circle—and an inner sanctum—became most vital and desirable. One highly coveted manifestation of this is Moonlight Basin, a membership club and community that offers the rare symmetry of rugged Montana, robust social conviviality and unsurpassed sporting pursuits from world-class skiing and golf to a wide variety of all-season outdoor activities. Moonlight Basin recalls life in the authentic mountain West, a place where time stands still and soulful adventure is part of daily life.

Moonlight Basin has emerged as a gold standard bolt-hole for the wealthy. This 8,000-acre private members’ ski and golf enclave adjacent to Big Sky Resort is bordered on three sides by protected lands. The newest club amenity, LakeLodge, includes 3-Forks Restaurant and Bar, a retail shop, fitness center, indoor 3-point basketball court, indoor climbing wall, golf simulator, ski and boot storage, outdoor pool and two hot tubs. Tee off at The Reserve, the beloved 18-hole Jack Nicklaus-signature golf course and clubhouse. The Signature Membership level includes reciprocal access to Spanish Peaks Mountain Club’s legendary 18-hole Tom Weiskopf golf course at Big Sky, where you could run into members Tom Brady or Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel.

At the nation’s most storied links, Augusta National Golf Club, old school members such as Warren Buffett and Bill Gates have rubbed shoulders with Washington power brokers for decades. That was then, so what’s the most coveted tee time invite in 2024? Michael Jordan’s new private golf club opened under a shroud of mystique in 2019 in Hobe Sound, adjacent to Jordan’s Florida home. Indeed, the stories around the secretive Grove XXIII have already become the stuff of legend—think the biggest names in entertainment and sport. Part of the growing enigma is that Jordan swears his members to secrecy. The one perk that guests can’t help posting to social? Video clips of the club’s drone delivery service dropping cold beer and nibbles to players mid-round have surfaced online. Hello Air Jordan!

While members may be drawn to the enviable Scottish-style links at The Abaco Club, they double down for the destination, after every family member and friend swoons for the views at first sight. While the club’s 18 holes remain the centerpiece amenity, the property sits on one of the most stunning locations in the entire Bahamian archipelago, owing to the exclusive, heart-shaped Winding Bay Beach, with its average water temperature of 79°F and powder-soft white sand. When it comes to captains of industry mingling over magnums of Moet and Maseratis, The Abaco Club offers members meaningful events that add value to the esteemed club’s social fabric. The décor pays homage to a noteworthy period of the island’s history from the late 1700s to the 1970s with its Neo-British Colonial style.

New developments like The Cays beachfront villas lead the way forward through purposeful design, while the Abaco leadership team innovates signature member experiences. The Founder’s Room is one of the most in-demand perks, with direct access to a private garden and accommodating up to 14 people for intimate gatherings. There’s an endless array of appealing ways to make the most of belonging: feasting at The Abaco Club’s four locally-sourced dining venues, or taking advantage of the spa and fitness center, tennis, pickleball and basketball courts, water sports, fishing and boating excursions. Little wonder members are so passionate about their beloved club, where the pace of daily life slows down, and the golf cart is the preferred mode of transport. Perks extend beyond its shores; members receive reciprocal privileges at all of Southworth Development’s award-winning private club communities, with each location offering its own distinct personality, amenities, golf course and accommodations. The Abaco Club members also gain access to The Executive Golfer Collection of more than 100 private clubs throughout the U.S. Memberships start at 150K, and there’s currently a waitlist.

Founded in 2012 in San Francisco, The Battery Club offers diverse programming like penthouse sound baths, wine tastings and country-themed dance nights. Designed by renowned interior designer Ken Fulk and located within a 58,000-square-foot former marble factory in the Financial District, the Battery boasts four bars, a restaurant, wine cellar, library, roof garden, wellness gym and a spa. There are also 14 guest rooms, including a penthouse with panoramic views of the Bay Bridge. Silicon Valley elites birth new businesses here; this is the advantage of private clubs in this era, they spark avenues to meet your next co-founder, investor, or advisory board ace. This is the enterprise of making business pleasurable. Just as Soho House goes truly global with Tel Aviv and Canouan locations, The Battery Club is doubling down on the Bay Area, developing an outpost in Oakland with its acquisition of the former Bellevue Club’s six-story Lake Merritt clubhouse. Further afield, Battery co-founders have established an alliance which grants members access to comparable clubs in 14 countries.

The most marvelous new amenity at The Battery? The world’s largest cheese cart lives here. Resident cheese curator Brandon Hicks guides diners through a rotating collection of 100 on any given night, pairing fromages and wines like a conversation between close confidantes. The theatrics of his presentation is a journey in itself, as every cheese on the cart evokes a story. Tasting the rare Vacherin Mont d’Or is euphoric, while the Sbrinz paired with honeycomb is ethereal. The Basque-style Vermont Shepherd between sips of tempranillo is a revelation. The Battery Club, with its eclectic blend of cultural events and culinary delights, epitomizes the spirit of innovation that defines the Bay Area ethos.

The timeless allure of members’ clubs stands as a testament to the enduring importance of genuine human connection. These exclusive enclaves, whether nestled in the rugged tranquility of Montana or gracing the sun-kissed shores of the Bahamas, serve as sanctuaries for those seeking respite from the frenetic pace of modern life. Each club offers its members a blend of luxury, camaraderie and bespoke experiences that transcend the ordinary. The bonds forged within these hallowed grounds endure far beyond the fairways and clubhouses. In an era where genuine connections are increasingly elusive, private clubs offer a rare opportunity to escape the noise of the world and savor the simple pleasures of friendship, fine dining and shared conviviality.

Hollywood jetsetters and pro athletes alike have made buddymoons a buzzy, rising trend for 2024, a way to emphasize the power of enduring friendships. Here are three next-level, over-the-top options for the most discerning of friend groups. Hangers on need not apply.

Private butler service at Anantara Rasananda is solid—friendly and attentive to any whimsy your buddymoon inspires. If your group chat is 50 percent chatter on best new restaurants to book your next table, this buddymoon will deliver on culinary delights. The resort offers a feast for the senses with its array of dining options. From all-day dining at Bistro at the Beach, featuring Thai and international dishes with an emphasis on fresh seafood, to the tantalizing flavors of Yukinoya, serving some of the best sushi on the island, every meal is a culinary journey of epic proportions. Villa Avellana, Costa Rica
From the moment I set foot upon the meticulously manicured grounds of Villa Avellana, it becomes abundantly clear that this is no ordinary five-star escape. From a buddymoon perspective, this is the latest and greatest venue in Central America. I’m in absolute awe of all the bonding rituals on the menu here—sportfishing trips, massage treatments, afternoons of chocolate making and wine sipping. The beauty of this place is rooted in the hyperlocal details; it’s a designer paradise nestled along the pristine shores of Costa Rica’s captivating coastline.

Villa Avellana, Costa Rica

Born of the visionary dreams of a once barefoot surf aficionado turned luxury hospitality mogul, this majestic retreat epitomizes the pinnacle of refined living amidst the untamed tropics. This whole villa is built on buddymoon vibes all grown up—the founder reveled in hosting surf buddies, kicking back and making memories. Sharing the peninsula with the Beyonce and Jay Z-favored Four Seasons Resort Papagayo and chic Andaz Costa Rica, Villa Avellana is a step up—if privacy is top priority. The 33,000-square-foot Villa Avellana can accommodate friend groups of up to 23 guests for $22,000 a night in low season, offering 10 ensuite bedrooms and a 42-foot luxury yacht on standby. Designed by Sarco Architects, it sits on an ultra-private sandy beach and is staffed by 20 attentive hospitality pros who orchestrate adrenaline-spiking adventures, couture dining and cultural immersions for guests with ravishing attention to personal interests.

Led by Thomas Freitag, the Swiss Army knife of General Managers, the staff fires in all cylinders. The dashing and sporty Canadian-born GM personally takes guests wildlife watching, trophy fishing or surfing. If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to spearfish, you couldn’t have a better local guide than Freitag. Chef David Moya is the villa’s secret weapon; I marvel at his symphony of sensory delights, as well as how the staff seems to know when I’m dehydrated before I do.

A testament to the enduring allure of the “Rich Coast,” Villa Avellana offers jetsetters a resplendent haven where indulgence knows no bounds. Whether savoring the succulent flavors of Wagyu beef raised on Costa Rican soil or embarking on a sunset cruise with lead concierge Sergio Jean at the helm, buddymooners rest assured that every desire, no matter how extravagant, will be effortlessly fulfilled. This magnificent retreat remains a harmonious extension of the verdant jungle that envelops it, a testament to the property’s unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship.

Bond x Bürgenstock is another offering made for next-level buddymoons. Switzerland is one of the most popular James Bond filming locations and The Bürgenstock Collection has hosted many glamorous scenes on and off camera. In 1964, Sean Connery and the crew shooting Goldfinger spent a month at the Bürgenstock Resort, shooting scenes near Hammetschwand Lift. Conor McGregor’s Evolution Beyond the UFC

Notoriety follows Conor McGregor in every aspect of his life — that’s par for the course for this multi-weight UFC champion, entrepreneur, global businessperson, and athletic icon. From electrifying gladiatorial arenas to the silver screen’s gilded halls, McGregor’s journey reads like a riveting epic, blending equal parts grit, gravitas, and unbridled audacity. As fans eagerly awaited his Hollywood debut in the Road House remake, where he takes on the role of ruthless villain opposite Jake Gyllenhaal’s complex hero, one thing is abundantly clear: McGregor’s ascent to the big screen is as swift and relentless as his lethal left hook.

From his humble beginnings in the working-class streets of Dublin to his coronation as the undisputed king of the octagon, McGregor’s journey is nothing short of legendary. With a record-breaking string of victories and a magnetic persona that captivates audiences worldwide, McGregor’s imprint on the sport of mixed martial arts is indelible, his legacy immortalized in the annals of combat sports history.

Amidst entrepreneurial pursuits, McGregor remains grounded with his devoted Dee by his side, and four children lighting up their sprawling Dublin estate. Family isn’t merely a refuge from fame; it’s the beating heart of McGregor’s existence, the driving force behind his every pursuit.

In our exclusive cover story, we go behind the scenes to unravel the enigma that is Conor McGregor. The man is a cultural phenomenon of his own making, a symbol of resilience and reinvention.

SP: On behalf of Jetset Magazine, we’re thrilled to speak with you. Thanks for your time. What’s been the most compelling or challenging aspect of your transition from the octagon to the silver screen?

CM: You’ve just got the kind of reverse engineer yourself, right? In the context of acting and filmmaking, I’m a white belt. So, I had to take that mentality and think, okay, I’ve achieved a lot in the fight game, but how can I condition myself in a new arena? It’s humbling in the best way; I got to ask a lot of questions and took direction very well.

SP: Your journey from MMA fighter to cast of Road House is remarkable given your Dublin street-cred roots. I’m sure you’ve turned down dozens of past movie offers in favor of this robust opportunity to remake an iconic film. What did director Doug Liman say to you to get you fired up?

CM: Doug and producer Joel Silver presented the total package. First off, I’m a big fan of Patrick Swayze and the original Road House. Hearing Jake Gyllenhaal was involved, alongside Billy Magnussen, that really pricked my ears up — the opportunity to join an amazing cast. Shooting in the Dominican Republic, with the backing of Amazon Prime and MGM Studios —that was a big draw too. Then there was sheer lucky timing. [I was] recovering from an injury from my last contest, so I had time off to allow for the shoot.

SP: When I saw how intricate, visceral, and “full send” the Road House fight sequences played out, I was gobsmacked, thinking… this is how McGregor gets over an injury? Ironically, your UFC trainer has to “protect you from fake fighting” in order for you to crush it on your return to the octagon. Were there any specific stunts that your trainer or attorney forbade you from engaging in on the set of Road House?

CM: No, nothing was officially off-limits. I do all my own stunts.

SP: Seriously? Even enduring simulated body blows and leg sweeps? Would you say you did 50 or 60% of the stunts that made it to the final cut?

CM: I’d say 98%. I was pretty much healed from the injury, but not to the point of returning to competition. The only thing they wouldn’t let me do was the scene where I fell backward down a flight of stairs.

SP: I’m glad they drew the line at the catastrophic stair crush.

CM: On the heavy fight choreography days, they had stunt doubles standing by at the ready. I just really didn’t think the guys looked like me, so I did it myself.

SP: I suppose that’s your “quality control” on the image and likeness front.

CM: Exactly. I was invested in the outcome at every stage.

SP: What has been the biggest game changer when it comes to overcoming injury? Have you discovered a new protocol or lifestyle shift that’s helped you reach the endgame?

CM: I love ice water immersion and a daily short stint of direct sun exposure. We must expose our bodies to stressors daily — saunas, fasting — this is how we become stronger.

SP: Your sartorial style sends a potent message in the ramp-up to a fight night when competitors show up to take the microphone in baggy T-shirts and jeans. I admire how you respect the forum by bringing your A game in terms of tailored suiting. Who are some of your go-to designers for pre-match press conferences?

CM: All my tailoring is done by David August Heil. He’s suited up the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr. We co-founded a clothing company called August McGregor; we’re enjoying growing the business. In the beginning, I didn’t have two cents for a suit. In my UFC debut as a prelim fighter, I packed my grandfather’s blazer because I knew I was going to perform and get a nice knockout, so I got to wear it for the first time as a winner in Sweden. Back in the day, Lorenzo Fertitta, former UFC CEO took me to see Heil and bought me a boatload of suits to do press.

SP: Speaking of your entrepreneurial instincts, who is your MVP when it comes to Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey?

CM: I’ve got my aces in co-founders Audie Attar and Ken Austin. It’s been a massive success and continues to expand. It’s a lovely liquid, and people are really enjoying it. I also bought a brewery and launched Forged Irish Stout; I control production and we’re in four countries: Ireland, UK, USA, and Sweden, and growing. I’ve got about a thousand parties set for St. Patrick’s Day festivities, between the stout and the whiskey brand.

SP: Let’s get meta. Who are you tapping to play Conor McGregor in the eventual Hollywood biopic? My pick is Tom Hardy, or Tom Holland if the screenplay is an origin story set in your mid-20s. Let’s manifest Ryan Gosling if you think he has the chops!

CM: Tom Holland is amazing in Spiderman. And Tom Hardy is now a Brazilian jiu-jitsu purple belt and a formidable force on the mat. He’s a frequent competitor, which is great to see for the sport. He’s the real deal for sure. Ryan Gosling is a great actor. So many of these guys are just believable. I mean Jake is 75 movies deep, and you really got to admire that skill level when faced with doing it yourself. All the props in the world to these guys. I was blown away when Jared Leto came out publicly to say he’d want to play Conor McGregor.

SP: Okay, that’s wildly promising, considering his memorable Oscar win.

CM: I know. He’s an absolutely incredible actor who can alter himself in mind-boggling ways for a role. We got to chatting in Cannes at a Spotify party and he told me he’d been studying my mannerisms; we had a good laugh about it all. But he was being completely serious about his interest in the role.

SP: If you had the opportunity to executive produce your own biopic, what decade or phase of your journey do you think would translate most profoundly or engagingly on screen?

CM: Probably my rise to the double world title. Now that was really raw. I was hungry; the hungry lion. I’m kind of like the fat cat now, you know? Powerful. Satisfied. But yeah, that’s not to say that I can’t starve to incite that hunger again… but that would be the most dramatic era. My rise from nothing to something to everything; there are ebbs and flows in the story and, God willing, I pray every day I can keep growing in grace. I’ve got four children and I’m raising them well. They’re here with me today, waiting in the next room. Thanks for diving in so deep with the film. This felt great!

Simply put, John Stewart wanted to save himself. Ultimately, this is the unifying reason we are all gathered at Kamalaya Koh Samui Wellness Sanctuary in Thailand. Welcome to founder John Stewart’s 70th birthday fire ceremony. Guests have flown in from across the globe, flowers flowing and glowing on this auspicious occasion. Nestled on the serene shores of Koh Samui, Kamalaya stands as a haven for those seeking truth in transformation. John’s own mother, in her 90s, is seated pride of place, looking resplendent in a regal plum color. At the heart of John’s transformation lies a narrative that goes beyond the creation of Kamalaya—a tale of resilience, radical change and the profound power of mental discipline.

I embarked on this Koh Samui sojourn with an open heart and a curious spirit. Little did I know a fire prophecy would illuminate and stir my soul in ways I am only now able to weave into words. The air was filled with anticipation, prayer flags flying high, marigold petals beneath our feet. The festivities began with a fortifying Tibetan fire ceremony. As flames danced in an ancient stoic ritual, I found myself drawn further into the primal space between those gathered. A powerful reminder of the impermanence of life, and the importance of leaning into the present moment. We sat in a circle around a common fire, all connected to the manifest destiny of one man, celebrating his soul and grace. We watched in awe as bright flowers became hypnotic flames, casting a warm glow on our cheeks, solemn chanting creating an otherworldly atmosphere. As the ceremony peaked, I felt an awakening of purpose and clarity. At the traditional banquet reception overlooking the sea, he thanked many lifelong friends with a sublime cast metal Buddha wrapped in beautiful golden silk. “That’s our John for you, always doing all the whimsical things. . .” I heard his friend of forty years remark, smiling down at the gift.

Later in the week as I sit with co-founders John and Karina, they open up about the pivotal moment that not only saved his life, but became the catalyst for a wellness sanctuary that would touch thousands of devotees over decades. Faced with serious health challenges, he embarked on a radical change in the way he nourished his body. “It was a moment of awakening, embracing food as potent medicine,” John reflects as we linger in the garden, his eyes conveying the gravity of this turning point. As he delves into details, it’s clear that a shift towards plant-based, nutrient-dense foods became the cornerstone of his healing. John’s newfound vitality became the driving force behind Kamalaya. Back in 2005, they set out to create a sanctuary embodying the principles of holistic living that had saved John. “We wanted to share innovations in transformative power of mind-body balance with others,” Karina beams between sips of lemongrass tea, “to create and hold space where people could embark on their own path to radiant health,” her musing Mona Lisa smile drawing me further in.

In the presence of these global wellness legends, I witness a living embodiment of the power of alignment. Karina has been an oracle of influence for so many leaders in the spa space, communing with her in person feels a bit like kismet—that her groundbreaking concepts have already reached me in meaningful ways. As we discuss Kamalaya’s evolution, John expresses gratitude for the team that shared their early uncompromising vision. “Sure, Kamalaya functions as a healthy business, but more than that, it’s a collective effort to make a positive impact on people’s lives,” he emphasizes. The resort, a leader in holistic wellbeing, stands as a testament to the radical change in diet that saved John’s life and laid the foundation for a sanctuary that has touched the lives of so many repeat guests.

In the week that followed, I immersed myself in Radiant Bliss, a brand new offering, customized to suit each guest. Designed by Karina, this series of wide-ranging treatments and therapies is not your average gamut of feel-good superficial fixes. It starts off with Body Bioimpedance Analysis for vital stats on cellular health, metabolism and toxicity to help create optimized naturopathic, nutrition and exercise programs. The “Three Treasures” treatment restores vital flow energy, while hyperbaric oxygen therapy literally fills you with new life. The Lanna Abdominal Samunprai Ron massage is an ancient herbal treatment that comes from northern Thailand, using fresh spicy herbs that are rich in essential oils and fire flare; the herbal remedies are heated and applied to the abdominal area. The treatment rebalances energy and the body’s elements, resulting in improved digestion and chronic lower back pain. It was not just the physical practices that touched me deeply; it was the connections I forged with fellow wellness seeking travelers and the wisdom shared by Kamalaya staff. Each interaction was a precious gift, an opportunity to learn and grow.

When John visited Koh Samui in 2000, he was particularly drawn to a cave that once served as a place of meditation by Buddhist monks, and with this discovery, he knew that he had found the ideal home for Kamalaya. To this day, Arjan Cave remains at the heart of the experience, where guests are welcome for quiet contemplation. One of the leading couples in the wellness space, both much in demand for speaking engagements, the Stewarts offer unique perspectives. John and Karina first met in 1982, on the outskirts of the Himalayas where John spent 16 years devoted to spiritual studies. Karina received her Master’s in Traditional Chinese Medicine from Yo San University in California. Her specialization at Princeton University was on Asian religions for her B.A. in Cultural Anthropology. Karina’s 22 years of experience in the study and practice of diverse Asian healing and her background as a doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine were crucial in the development of Kamalaya’s diverse range of wellness programs and the compelling cuisine concept that supports it.

There are over 50 certified wellness professionals at Kamalaya, including naturopaths, doctors of Chinese medicine, western medical doctors, registered nurses, nutritionists, life transformation experts, Ayurvedic and Thai therapists, fitness specialists and yoga, meditation and pranayama teachers. Kamalaya offers 16 wellness programs that fall into five different categories, including Healthy Lifestyle, Detox & Reset, Stress & Burnout, Cultivating Heart, Body & Spirit; and a Taste of Kamalaya programs, making Kamalaya one of the first detox and cleansing resorts in Thailand. The retreat has been recognized around the world as one of the leading wellness destinations, and has won multiple awards while attracting visitors from Europe, Australia, the US, the Middle East and Asia. Kamalaya was clearly envisioned by two passionate people uniting diverse traditions and cultures in a nurturing, healing environment from which people can explore and embrace life’s highest potential.

What a gift, to delve into the sanctuary’s longevity secrets and gain insights from its visionary founders. Kamalaya, a Sanskrit word meaning “lotus realm,” perfectly encapsulates the essence of this place. From the moment you step onto the lush grounds, surrounded by verdant foliage and the soothing sounds of nature, it’s clear Kamalaya is more than a posh destination for the digestively distressed; it’s a place that will hold you and love you back if you let it. As I toast to John Stewart’s milestone birthday, I can’t help reflecting on the legacy he’s created. Kamalaya is a beacon for seekers like me, a sacred place where self-discovery, discipline and detox are not merely buzzwords, but a way of life. In quiet moments of introspection, I realize the fire ceremony ignited a spark. I’d always been a wanderer—ever seeking new adrenaline and shiny external adventures—but now I understand the most meaningful explorations begin within. Leaving Kamalaya may feel bittersweet, but carrying its sovereign wisdom with me feels like a long game superpower.

Thriving in the heart of the Tyrolean Alps, Bio-Hotel Stanglwirt stands as a haven of tranquility that’s truly stood the test of time. A beloved hotel over 400 years old, family-owned for 300 years, and until Covid, had not been closed a single day in over 250 years. Surrounded by Austria’s majestic mountains, this extraordinary sanctuary blends luxury with a deep commitment to sustainability. From the minute Stanglwirt’s dirndl-clad staff beckons us with welcome drinks, my heart rate slows and the kindred spirit in the air is palpable.

As legacy owners of Stanglwirt, Balthasar and Magdalena Hauser are farmers and hoteliers in equal measure—resulting in the most gracious expression of symbiosis in European hospitality. I meet Maria Hauser by the fireplace in the lobby; she is the elder daughter of the Hausers and mother of the Stanglwirt’s ray of sunshine “Leni” (born 2013). The luminous, lively blonde beams from within when reflecting on Stanglwirt’s storied history. “We lead with our hearts here, it is at the core of our family—warmth, grace, hospitality,” Hauser says as we sink into plush armchairs with a sparkling grüner veltliner. “My grandmother had this way of welcoming people; it became our signature that spread through word of mouth. Travelers were drawn from far and wide to feel it for themselves.”

Stanglwirt began in 1609 as a bar on the main road, frequented by copper miners. An ancestor of the Hauser family took over the tavern in 1722. When Balthasar Hauser III, then 17, inherited the seven-room inn from his mother in the early 1970s, not much had changed. Maria Hauser describes how his determination paid off in spades, “Not even 20 years old and without much capital, my father trusts his intuition and starts construction on the main building in 1968. No architect, no supplies—the timber from reclaimed wood from local farms.” His sheer grit pays off; Stanglwirt’s popularity soon knows no bounds. “Our staff culture is a big part of our success with repeat guests,” she reflects with pride. “Families feel at home and in turn, our staff learns what means the most to them, what special touches bring joy.”

Settling into the Kaiserbogen Luxury Suite for the night carries a sublime sense of magic—the crackling fireplace, soaring pitched ceiling, the delicious feel of sheepskin rugs underfoot. Handcrafted with traditional building methods, it features a large living room and bedroom with a Swiss stone pine king, and two large terraces with sweeping views of ‘Wilder Kaiser’ mountain. A spacious bathroom with a corner tub welcomes us after a day in the saddle or on skis. Even elevator interiors are crafted of wood, with a fold-down seat and corner cupboard carrying a bottle of schnapps and two small glasses. How wonderfully whimsical, and playfully hospitable as I’m discovering—in the signature Stanglwirt way.

The next morning, it’s bucket list time. A massive window overlooking an indoor riding arena showcases Stanglwirt’s gleaming white Lipizzaner horses, trotting elegantly in circles. While Bill Gates coveted the Codex Leicester to the Christie’s tune of US$30,802,500, the Hauser family puts a premium on their own Lipizzaner stud. Royal Lipizzan Stallions of Austria are the most rare and aristocratic breed of horses in the world. Their lineage can be traced back 2,000 years ago to Carthage and the bloodline includes Pyrenees, Arab and Andalusian strains. Astride a Lipizzaner for the first time, I can sense the power and agility; little wonder they were prized for centuries by cavalry commanders and European nobility alike. Channeling my inner Jessica Springsteen, I ride the magnificent stead between the Austrian flags for the ultimate equestrian photo op.

Indeed, sports enthusiasts find themselves in paradise with Stanglwirt’s top-notch tennis, golf, and ski offerings. Kitzbühel’s ski slopes—home of the “Hahnenkamm races”—are on the resort’s doorstep, and there’s nothing quite like chasing a hamstring-cranking day with a spa session at Stanglwirt. A veritable oasis of rejuvenation, submerge strained muscles in beautifully designed thalassotherapy pools, alternating between a collection of saunas varying in style and temperature. Offering a holistic approach to wellbeing, the spa’s menu draws from traditional Alpine therapies and modern wellness practices.

From traditional Austrian delicacies to international gourmet cuisine, Stanglwirt’s diverse menu caters to every palate. Our dining experience reaches the pinnacle at Gasthof Stangl, where time-honored recipes and modern gastronomic techniques harmoniously intertwine. Back in the day, Stanglwirt became famous as the inn with the cowshed window in the dining room. Nowhere else could guests watch dairy cows during an exquisite meal, and vice versa. When extending the dining room, a derelict storage room had to be demolished, and behind the hole in the wall were the cows. Instead of a problem, they saw creative opportunity. To this day, the cowshed window remains the hottest table in town.

Stanglwirt’s legendary “Gemütlichkeit” attracts the A-list from the realms of sport, entertainment, and business—whether flying in for the famed White Sausage Party, or to bucket list the Hahnenkamm. Famous guests include Bing Crosby, Clark Gable, Prince Albert of Monaco, the Aga Khan, Aristotle Onassis, Gwyneth Paltrow, Henry Ford II, Muhammad Ali, Jessica Alba, and the Swarovski family. Native son Arnold Schwarzenegger has had a standing reservation on his favored suite for years. Despite the carousel of famous faces, the vibe is decidedly relaxed and respectful of privacy. From its world-class spa to the exceptional sports facilities, Stanglwirt is an unparalleled retreat for those seeking harmony between indulgence and wellness.

After Mammoth’s “greatest ski season of our lifetime” gilded its reputation as one of the most dependable destinations for powder hounds, Outbound Mammoth is beyond ready for this 2023-2024 winter season. Mammoth Mountain’s abundance was nothing short of monumental; record snow led to an extended season all the way to August 6th, 2023. Indeed, Mammoth has been flexing on every ski resort in the country all season long. After taking on challenging cornices that start well above the treeline, we hit up Upper Road Runner to the backside of the mountain, then onto Santiago—a blue with a solid incline for making crisp, clean turns. For sweet powder stashes in the trees, hit up Avalanche Shoots off Chair 22. After lunch, cruise corduroy-groomed blues like Easy Rider and Wall Street. Talk about a wild west winter for slope addicts jockeying for a fix all the way to Independence Day and beyond.

When it comes to authentic charms, Outbound Mammoth rules the roost when it comes to this mountain town. Formerly Sierra Nevada Resort, the property’s main appeal lies in its laidback conviviality—guests are not glued to their screens in the lobby; they’re trading avid angling, skiing or hiking stories. In winter, visitors take in a wonderland with every snow sport imaginable—acres of divine skiing, snowboarding, snowshoe tours, snowmobiling, and ice climbing. In the summer, golf, kayaking, and fly-fishing draw people out, while street fairs and live music fill the streets. Outbound Mammoth’s collection of 10 free-standing cabins debuted in Spring 2023, while a heated pool, two spa tubs, and an outdoor culinary garden completed the renovation by autumn. 20 new villas are perfect for travelers seeking a little more privacy. Cap off a vigorous day on the slopes at Bar Sierra, a new casual eatery offering a Californian take on classic BBQ.

Opened in 1967 by legendary real estate developer and former LA Lakers owner Jerry Buss as a getaway for Hollywood elite, Outbound Mammoth is a western classic reborn as a modern mountain retreat. A gallery wall of historic signed photographs pays homage to guests like John Wayne, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. “We wanted to restore and reimagine this historic property while retaining its early Hollywood legacy and unbridled mountaineering spirit,” reflects Brent Truax, Managing Director. Truax’s team unveiled the renovation just in time for the Mammoth Film Festival last year, encompassing 179 accommodations including deluxe rooms, fireplace suites and chalets. Imagine christening the inviting lobby lounge with the likes of Twilight’s Peter Facinelli and Ashley Greene, while Emile Hirsch rides high on winning Best Actor for his performance in Immaculate Room. Guests sipped on Saldo Wines and El Cristiano Tequila cocktails while warming up by the convivial sunken fireplace framed by intimate baguette seating. Despite blizzard conditions, the beloved annual fest hosted talent across 84 films, 22 international features and 14 world premieres. Multiple red carpets were packed with filmmakers and starring talent, most notably Dylan Sprouse, Jamie Chung, Bryan Greenberg, and Aja Naomi King. How did this storied spot earn such a loyal fan base? Chip Ermish, wine director and sommelier, keeps repeat guests coming back. Touring Outbound Mammoth’s cellar with him is akin to taking in an antiquities library with Indiana Jones. He holds court at the resort’s buzzy new wine bar; guests enjoy a curated selection of international wines while engaging with one of California’s foremost wine experts. Ermish got his start in 1977 while studying abroad in Florence, Italy. Lacking the means to travel home to Queens, New York for Christmas, Chip’s dorm mate invited him to his grandfather’s winery just outside Siena, Italy. He was soon blending barrels, passing his first level sommelier test in Tuscany before returning stateside to finish his degree.

After retiring from corporate life as Vice President at NBC, Ermish was sought out to manage private wine cellars and help restaurants build world-class wine lists. He earned a Wine Spectator accolade for Jimmy’s Taverna, where his list earned the No. 4 spot in the coveted top wine lists in a resort setting. “It’s wild to collapse preconceived notions, inviting guests to engage with fine wines sourced from underappreciated wine regions such as Lebanon and Greece,” Ermish emphasizes with a glint in his ice blue eyes. His effervescent demeanor is as lively as the vintage Champagne he pours us in the cellar. Indeed, this sommelier’s ace is his candor—he shares wine knowledge in ways that resonate, connecting compelling insider anecdotes with guests in a meaningful way.

We brave the blizzard gripping the Brunello di Montalcino bottle Ermish paired with our reservation at Vulcania, Mammoth’s buzziest new hotspot owned by James Beard Award finalist Bryan Voltaggio and his brother Michael Voltaggio. The Food Network stars launched their new modern Italian American concept to much fanfare—think flawless woodfired pizzas, silky smooth Rigatoni Arrabbiata, alongside quirky items like VoltaggiOs, a playful, upscale version of SpaghettiOs. Vulcania marks the brothers’ first joint concept in California, an homage to their Italian roots and a love letter to alpine sports. As lifts close, skiers are let out at the front door of Vulcania; guests are welcome in their boots for a hearty meal and après drink. The mountain becoming a part of Vulcania is as vital as the restaurant becoming a part of the mountain. Chances are, you’ll spot the boarding brothers catching runs in between rolling out gnocchi of the day! Not to be missed on your next trip to Mammoth.

Recognized as the original creator of the micro-endorsement space, natural born innovator turned serial entrepreneur and veteran in digital start-ups, Peter Philipp Wingsoe touts over 30+ years of experience in start-ups, management, and international expansion and business development. As a Co-Founder and C-level Executive, he has a proven track record for determining and ensuring a brand’s success in its home territory as well as in international markets.

Today Wingsoe is CEO, International for FLIP, (FLIP.shop), the largest and fastest growing social commerce company in the USA. He and his team have built out the app architecture to support engagement on a whole new level.

From major beauty influencers Addison Rae and Patrick Starrr to Shayla Mitchell and Ariel Tejada, FLIP MVPs have changed the vernacular of short videos and live streams in the beauty space.

SiSi Penaloza: Thank you for speaking with us and sharing some of the highlights of your vivid and storied career with our Jetset audience. In terms of leadership style, what defines your sensibility in this arena?

Peter Philipp Wingsoe: I’m older and wiser now so I very much believe in leading by example. From the very start of someone’s work relationship under my tenure, I ask all my team members to outline their strengths and weaknesses. With this exercise, I can play off of their strengths and try my best to avoid their weaknesses. This is not always comfortable for people in the beginning because most will want to either hide or simply not admit to any weaknesses.

There is no point in asking someone to do something that they’re not good at. It’s a lot more rewarding to go home feeling empowered, then you come back the next day that much more energized and loving what you do. You will try harder; work harder and actually be better at the job — It’s a true win-win.

SiSi: One of the things I hear a lot from the business community is that you’ve been extremely successful at building teams throughout your career. What is your approach and how do you set up your team for success?

Peter: Yes, one of my true strengths is building great teams for the tasks at hand. During start-up mode, I seek quick thinkers that adapt and pivot fast. During the growth stage, I seek out those excellent at scaling and once we are running full throttle, I look for executives that operate and optimize for efficiency. I’ve been told that I’m a great leader, probably because I take the time to work with my teams to ensure I get the results I want. My talent is being an entrepreneur, not being a VP of a department. I’m not an expert in the details of each department, I leave that to each member that reports to me, but I know what I need, when I need it, and then who to hire for it.

SiSi: The retailer of the future must masterfully harness the power of data, quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and augmented reality. Based on your previous experience, do you find the beauty and fashion space lends itself particularly well to adopting new ideas and platforms early?

Peter: The early adopters tend to be companies that are smaller, nimbler, and less afraid of trying new ways of doing things, but I do not think it is as much sector specific, but rather company specific. In general, when a company is run by its founder(s), it’s agile but when it’s run by a hired CEO, it often becomes stale. I can give you endless examples, but my point is, it’s not the sector or industry, but WHO is actually running the company.

SiSi: The pandemic truly brought technology front and center. E-commerce, online customer service, contactless solutions—lifelines, especially for retailers that have had to close their stores during pandemic-related lockdowns. While Sephora went dormant, FLIP.shop thrived and multiplied in ways that must have been so validating for your team to track. What was the first major metric or milestone that your team celebrated?

Peter: Each department worked hard and reached milestones quicker and more efficiently than we could have ever imagined. Many of these are not necessarily noticeable to someone on the outside, but that doesn’t make them less valuable to the business overall. The most noticeable to the consumer was probably the number of brands that embraced us very early on. We launched with about 200 brands on the platform, and in a matter of months grew to almost 1000 brands.

Today, we have over 2000+ brands live and we are constantly onboarding more. When brands started telling us that we were driving traffic for them and had become a major part of not only their sales but more importantly their marketing, THAT was when we truly knew that we had something that was making a distinguishable and real difference.

SiSi: As the original innovator of the micro-endorsement space, what signs did you see emerging that helped you get the jump on how impactful peer-to-peer and influencer marketing would evolve to be?

Peter: Micro endorsements have evolved significantly over the last 18+ years. When we originally started doing this at EFG back in the early 2000’s, we were simply doing one-off deals mostly with larger well-known celebrities, then eventually with smaller “publishers” as we called them at ad.ly. As technology involved, it was really trying to figure out how it could be scaled, which we eventually did at ad.ly, adinfluent and with our company, looksy.

Scaling happened, but the overall impact of many influencers eventually started dwindling. I began noticing this in 2018-2019, before the pandemic. Most people disagreed with me at the time and said I just wasn’t seeing it, and in fairness to them, the industry was white hot. There was a huge uptick in influencers, but not in conversions. Like stocks, most people don’t buy early, they buy stock when it’s hot, and then it is too late. You have to be able to see the trend before it happens.

This is exactly what makes FLIP different; it’s not influencers that are told to post about a certain product that are creating reviews, but rather REAL people, the shoppers themselves, the consumers that have actually purchased the products from us directly that post the reviews. A straightforward review by a real customer!

SiSi: As one of the largest social commerce platforms in the United States, FLIP’s growth has been nothing short of seismic. The company recently raised its Series B at a 500-million-dollar valuation, and may be the next Unicorn. What companies and leaders have inspired you in your path to date?

Peter: Yes, we’ve grown significantly and continue to grow, even as the overall market has cooled. We raised our series B last summer, and have grown significantly since then, unicorn status is next for sure. For me one of the most aspiring people I’ve ever met, is our founder at FLIP, Noor Agha. I have never met anybody as dedicated as him, and though he often says that I am an older version of him, I’m not sure that I can live up to that—he is a true visionary.

Regardless, he is the main reason I decided to come out of retirement and help build this amazing company with him. After I left my last company in Asia and moved back to the USA, I decided I was going to retire. I had a few board seats and kept busy doing some angel investing and advising, but Noor had other ideas for me, and it was his vision, and his true dedication to FLIP that made me hang up the retirement hat, and do it one more time.

SiSi: Of all the magnificent FLIP moments and accolades along the way to hitting peak cult status among skincare aficionados, beauty editors, and makeup tutorial junkies, what validation means the most to you?

Peter: I think the most important for me is knowing that we’re truly building something that’s changing the e-commerce landscape. By now I have met countless brands that have told me amazing stories about how they have grown significantly since launching on FLIP and if it wasn’t for Flip they would be no more. We helped them get discovered.

Likewise, I’ve met countless of customers who share with me that they have discovered new brands and products that they never knew existed. Shoppers who found products that they would never have purchased before, had they not seen another customer, that they could relate to, reviewing that product. It is truly amazing to see the small micro communities that are being built endlessly day after day on FLIP.

SiSi: What vital intelligence or insight did you take away from your prestigious post as Master Franchisor and CEO of MANGO for the Philippines and Thailand that has served you well in current ventures?

Peter: As a serial entrepreneur, I think that each and everything that I’ve done through my life has an impact on what I do today, not just my last position. I’ve built so many successful companies, most have been sold but many are still around today and each has taught me a different set of skills. Operating a business in Asia and a brand as big as MANGO is very different from operating a business here in the United States. I’m not sure if that experience makes me any better at helping Flip grow here in the United States, but what I can tell you is, there is no one that knows the international market, especially Asia, better than me!

I don’t mean to sound arrogant, but most of the Brands that we acquired in Asia for distribution enjoyed great success under my management; some of the brands were already established in Asia before we took them, but failing, including MANGO, which was bankrupt when we took over as the master franchisor; I turned that business around in just 18 months, closed underperforming stores, renegotiated leases with all the malls, opened new flagship store in the best malls and in the best locations. Asia is a hard market to crack and succeed in. Countless companies have tried and failed. One of my partner’s once said to me… “If you succeed once, you can, at best, call it luck, if you can do it twice you can call it a skill” at this point I’ve done it more than half a dozen times.

SiSi: You’ve launched and acted as an advisor on various business entities in the online, mobile and digital space—Tinder, ad.ly, looksy, VMoney as well as TRV, TRIMARK, FICO and Retail Specialist Inc. Leaders in the space are drawn to your trailblazing expertise in the retail and brand sector, both domestically and internationally. What has made you so adept at reading the retail sector, predicting industry trends before they become widespread?

Peter: Wow, that’s a big question and thank you for the compliments. I’m clearly a bit different than your average CEO out there. I think there are many reasons for my success, but mainly 1) I’m highly creative 2) I’m very analytical and 3) I am very good at combining the two. Essentially, my left brain works very well with my right brain. I’ve come to realize that not a lot of people can do this. I’m as comfortable with the creative team as I am with the finance team. My creative side helps me see and envision the future and my analytical side allows me to figure out how the brand or product can perform and take advantage of opportunities.

As mentioned before, I’ve been extremely successful in Asia, a market that’s not easy to operate in and many companies tend to fail. It’s important to be flexible and willing to adjust when going into new markets. Many companies forget that the reason they became a success was because they adjusted until they found the right way to do it, but the right way here is not necessarily the right way over there. The number of times I’ve heard: “This is how we work here; we want to do the same there” Or “We tried that here and it didn’t work” but out there is NOT here or vice-versa. The ability to understand different markets, the cultures, the opportunities that each market offers, and being able to translate this into a day-to-day win for a brand has been something I’ve succeeded at. I never give up, and I don’t mind failing because I keep trying until I succeed. I know my strengths and weaknesses. Never underestimate the power of this.

SiSi: In the era of over subscription, over saturation, overstimulation, how does FLIP innovate to get right in the sweet spot of what your customer base is looking for?

Peter: I think one of the most important assets is our transparency and authenticity of the platform overall. Secondly, we listen not only to our customers, but also to all our brand partners. We are not afraid of change, but rather embrace it in order to constantly improve our platform to better serve both our shoppers as well as brands. We recently started adding more categories, in order to provide more variety for the shoppers, giving the customers more choices and providing a better experience for them. Additionally, for brands, we have changed the way that we work with them and simplified the overall process to make it easier for all our brand partners to work with us, and most importantly to be successful with us.

We recently launched our dropship model which has been a huge success; we simply connect with a brand’s existing online store, feature any of their products on FLIP and when customers place an order with us, they simply pick, pack and ship it from their own warehouse! It would be the same way they handle any orders that are placed directly on their own brand website. This has been a huge success as brands can literally go live within an hour after speaking to one of our onboarding team members.

SiSi: You are renowned for possessing a super sentient literacy when it comes to reading the room, gaining allies and forging strategic partnerships. How did you develop such nuanced diplomatic skill?

Peter: I live by a simple phrase: “In life, it does not matter what you say, it only matters what people hear.” Essentially, it is not the actual reality that’s important, but the perceived reality. Once you truly understand that, you will start seeing the world slightly different; you will see that most are too focused on what they are saying, but not on what others are hearing.

SiSi: What are some of the lifehacks you have relied on in balancing travel—bouncing between your residences in Los Angeles, Manila and Bangkok—with professional engagements, conferences and business meetings?

Peter: I’m a typical Aries, I quickly get bored of the same place, so being able to travel between not only my residences, but also between professional engagements, etc. has actually been energizing for me. Additionally, I am not a micromanager, so the team that reports directly to me needs to be extremely capable and self-motivated, allowing me to be out of reach for 1-2 days at a time without any interruptions to the business.

This goes back to what I said earlier, understand your strengths and weaknesses in order to ensure that your team complements your own abilities, ensuring there is a proper balance. A few life hacks that have definitely helped with travel internationally is Global Entry, PS at LAX, and similar VIP concierge services in Asia that allow me to bypass overcrowded check-in counters and long immigration lines. Additionally, lounges, particularly the ones in Asia, provide me a beautiful and ultra-modern place to freshen up, catch up on work, or get a bite to eat in between flights. This has been a gamechanger!

SiSi: On a more personal note, what is your idea of a perfect weekend escape?

Peter: Because my work life at times can be very public, I prefer my personal time to be very private. Weekends are very important for me; it’s the only time I can fully recharge. No matter if I stay local or decide to head out of town for one or two nights, I prefer them to be quiet, low-key and peaceful. If I stay in town I usually prefer to be at the beach and go for some long walks to get some fresh air to clear my mind. If I’m in LA, I also like the idea of driving down to Palm Springs. I love the heat; but if I had my way, I would prefer to be at my homes in Asia — there’s something about tropical warm weather and the constant sound of the ocean that keeps me calm and relaxed. I actually wish I was walking on an Asian beach right now!
