The Hollywood film industry has reshaped the cultural landscape of both America and the rest of the world, inspiring countless imaginations through the magic of movies. With a history that spans almost a hundred years, the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences has long honored cinematic excellence through its annual Academy Awards ceremony, which celebrates innovations in cinematography, acting and animation. Now this legendary institution, tasked with archiving Hollywood’s past, has opened a museum in Los Angeles to educate the public about the storied legacy of Hollywood movies and directors.

After its original 2020 debut was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures finally opened its doors to the public in September 2021. Located in the Miracle Mile neighborhood of L.A., the May Company Building, which houses the museum, is a spectacular site to behold. Embodying the glamour and wonder of a blockbuster movie, the 300,000 square-foot museum boasts a collection of props from some of the most iconic films ever produced and curates fascinating exhibitions about Hollywood’s most influential celebrities and features. The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is not only an exciting educational field trip but also an architectural achievement, with tailor-made interiors that captivate and astound—just like the movies.

Iconic Interiors

The museum’s main buildings house a series of exhibits that give behind-the-scenes glimpses into some of Hollywood’s most acclaimed productions, but a stroll through the Renzo Piano-designed facility alone is worth the price of admission. In addition to the Sabon main building, the museum features a new extension, accessible via skyways, which boasts a stunning theatre room, ideal for viewings, events, and premieres. From its polished limestone exteriors to its stunning geometric dome, this wing of the Saban building is awe-inspiring, its airy rooftop terraces a perfect place to catch some refreshing rays of the California sun. But it’s the lavish interiors of this remarkable new theatre space that are making waves and attracting visitors everywhere.

The David Geffen Theatre can seat up to 1,000 guests, its acoustics and legroom setting a new standard for luxury film viewing. What’s perhaps most elegant about this bright red theatre space is its sumptuous seating, which was upholstered by Poltrona Frau Custom Interiors, an upscale Italian furniture company. Made of soft and resilient red velvet, these seats lend to a cozy and comfortable movie-going experience, and they speak to the company’s hundred-year reputation for creating next-level upholstery and finely crafted furniture. Attending the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is a sprawling adventure, where guests can get lost in the vivid wonder of classic Hollywood. And the David Geffen Theatre, with all its magic and innovation, allows guests to feel like they are the guest of honor at a red-carpet premiere.

Endless Exhibitions

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is also a treasure trove of iconic memorabilia from the most famous films ever made. The museum’s archives own a vast collection of over 13 million costumes, set pieces, and props, including Dorothy’s red slippers from The Wizard of Oz, shark molds from the movie Jaws, and the typewriter Alfred Hitchcock used to write his masterpiece Psycho. Additionally, the museum hosts a special exhibit displaying outfits worn by child star Shirley Temple, whose colorful and whimsical musicals became popular films during the 1930s. But the museum showcases more than items from classic movies from yesteryear. The museum’s various exhibitions also display dresses and costumes from recent masterpieces like LaLa Land and the horror film Midsommar, among countless others. Better yet, exhibitions with a variety of themes are slated to cycle through from year to year, giving patrons a reason to come back for more. Here, visitors can easily get lost for hours reminiscing about their favorite Hollywood blockbuster and watching cutting-edge audiovisual presentations about the hard work that goes into making a cinematic masterpiece.

Freshly opened to the public (for now, by appointment only), the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will undoubtedly become a must-see attraction for tourists and locals alike. Built to inspire, the museum’s lavish theatres, dazzling architecture, and hours of entertainment make for a thrilling educational adventure in the heart of Hollywood, where the majesty and artistry of the cinema come vividly to life.

El Gran Fellove, a new documentary feature from actor and filmmaker Matt Dillon, follows the musical career of Cuban scat singer and showman Francisco Fellove and the recording of his final album. An artful series of interviews draw out rich details, revelations both bombastically big to achingly sweet and small. Archival photos and videos flush out the mise en scene of the era, supported well by Dillon’s own footage. A ravishing portrait of Fellove’s life as a struggling musician in Cuba, his eventual success in Mexico, and the contagious passion he had for performing.

The film opens with Dillon revealing his early obsession for digging through crates of LPs, having fallen down the rabbit hole of Cuban vinyl on a 1993 trip to Havana. The genesis of the film starts in 1999, when LA bandleader impresario Joey Altruda goes looking for Fellove to float the idea of making a record with the long-lost legend. “Matt and I initially bonded as record collectors in the pre-Internet era, hunting together in all kinds of places,” recalls Altruda on our call. The two friends collaborated on the new documentary and had spent hours riffing and spinning rare Fellove. Dillon was the natural choice to come along for this wild ride. They tracked the then 77-year-old ex-pat to Mexico City, finding him remarkably sprightly. Fellove was so spry, the virtuoso proved tricky to document on film because he seemed constantly in motion.

Indeed, Joey Altruda is one of music’s best kept secrets, a musical excavator who has collaborated with aging, venerable artists to preserve culture and legacy through reinvention of music. He’s a hidden gem who has worked with enigmatic musicians of the old school generation – saxophonist Roland Alphonso (who co-created The Skatalites), guitarist Ernest Ranglin (key figure in the pioneering of Ska and Reggae music starting in the late 1950s), Plas Johnson (saxophonist of The Wrecking Crew and Pink Panther Theme), El Gran Fellove, and most recently the pioneer of Brazil’s Tropicalia movement Tom Zé.

I catch up with director Matt Dillon on a call while he’s taking a quick break from acting in a new film shooting on Vancouver Island. Dillon is more than primed to elaborate on the project he started more than two decades ago. “It was an incredibly personal experience, as Fellove had loomed so large in my imagination,” he begins. “Then you meet him and he ends up becoming larger than life, you see his humanity. You start to look at your own life, reflecting on the moments that made the difference. He was escaping difficulties with racism and the frustration of struggling as an artist. He had immediate success in Mexico; the act of expatriation was a catalyst, he was met with open arms by both the local music scene and an enthusiastic audience. Mexico City was a pivotal bridge for these artists, and I like how our film reveals this, bringing this aspect of history to light.”

Sure, Fellove hadn’t recorded for 20 years, but the temptation of these young, fresh, energetic creatives chomping at the bit to jam in his orbit proved too delicious to resist. He took the bait of a studio session. “We held a casual jam session with Fellove and the musicians on the album in someone’s home as a way to get musically acquainted and find our groove as a rhythm section. This was my first musical encounter with Fellove and it was mind-blowing, especially one particular moment when he was practically speaking in musical tongues,” Altruda recalls vividly. “It was literal and visible what he did at that moment with his tongue. I thought I had imagined it at first but afterward my friend Nicole said, ‘Did you see that crazy thing he did with his tongue?!’ It’s hard to articulate but it was almost snakelike and the sound that came forth was like nothing I’d ever heard before.”

Such sessions run throughout the film, swelling with sonic euphoria and robust collaborative energy. The scat singing veteran seemed to thrive on being “rediscovered” by this next generation. As a director, Dillon seems more interested in the psychological portraiture of a musician who left his native Cuba in the 1950s, to later reinvent himself in Mexico as an idiosyncratic vocal stylist. “What I learned in making this film is that when you lead with emotion, this is your most meaningful compass,” Dillon reveals. “Emotion first, information second. Once you can connect with the people you are featuring as subjects, the audience can connect with them and absorb information in a gratifying way because they are emotionally invested.”

Fascinated by Altruda’s memories of that time, I ask what is it about Fellove’s soulful vocals that stir such seismic, visceral emotions in him. “He sings truth, no matter what style he’s doing,” he replies. “You really hear it in his Boleros; you can feel it deep down in the gut.” No stranger to recording with “the greats”, Altruda put his whole heart into the jams. Over 35 years, Altruda has worked with the likes of Seu Jorge, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Bo Diddley, Tom Waits, and Joe Strummer just to start. This provocative chronicle of exile and full-circle reunion will be irresistible to Afro-Cuban aficionados and Latin scat fans. An irrepressible character when it comes to stage work, the period footage of Fellove in his 1950s prime gives us a rare glimpse into this full-on showman in all his glory.

Dillon recalls the sessions much the same way, saying, “Fellove taught me by example, watching him was what was beautiful. The freedom, and effortless way he would create lasting moments in front of audiences and in studio. When he was at his best was when he didn’t try.” Dillon was most struck by Fellove’s natural gift of expression. Revisiting his own emergence as an artist he reflects, “I came up as an actor at a very young age, and what we valued was that elusive Fellove factor— absolute spontaneity. The most coveted element of performance for an actor is the freedom to improvise. Recognizing this in Fellove was no different for me than recognizing it in someone like Marlon Brando or James Dean. Those actors influenced me as I honed my approach to the creative process. Fellove had it in spades when it came to music.”

Golden Globes: A Wrap on This Year’s 78th Annual Awards Show

This year’s Golden Globes hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler came together both virtually and comedically from two different sides of the country proving that pure chemistry knows no boundaries. Tina Fey beamed in from the Rainbow Room in New York City, while Poehler chimed in from the Beverly Hills Hotel’s International Ballroom in Los Angeles. The dynamic duo’s opening monologue kicked off with both insults and praise, in front of essential workers and first responders clad in masks and socially distanced for safety. Both winners and losers alike joined-in virtually for the 78th annual event for an evening of accolades, fashion, and firsts. These are just a few of the top award winners from this year’s celebration of television and film.

Best Director Motion Picture

Frances McDormand and Chloé Zhao on the set of “Nomadland”

Beijing-born filmmaker Chloe Zhao makes history becoming the first Asian woman to win Best Director as well as picking up a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture for Nomadland. It was also the first time more than one woman was nominated for Best Director. This year set a record for women nominations in the category at three, as Regina King and Emerald Fennell were also up for the honor.

Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture

Jodie Foster wins her third Golden Globe for The Mauritanian. In the legal drama, she plays attorney Nancy Hollander, who defends the freedom of 9/11 plot suspect Mohamedou Ould Slahi, a young man jailed for 14 years in Guantanamo Bay.

Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture

Winning over Hollywood mainstays like Bill Murray and Jared Leto, Daniel Kaluuya portrays charismatic and inspirational Black Panther leader, Fred Hampton, in Judas and the Black Messiah. The British Get Out actor has risen to leading man status in just a few short years.

Best Picture Drama

Nomadland took the top honors over other favorites such as The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Promising Young Women. The film from director Chloe Zhao follows the American West exploration of Fern, played by Frances McDormand, after the economic collapse of her rural Nevada town as she meets friends and faces obstacles throughout her nomadic journey.

Best Actress – Motion Picture Drama

In the film The United States vs. Billie Holiday, Best Actress winner and “Rise Up” singer Andra Day plays legendary singer Billie Holiday in this biopic original film from streaming service Hulu.

Best Actor – Motion Picture – Drama

The late Chadwick Boseman’s performance in the film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom earned him a posthumous Best Actor award with many looking forward to an Oscar run as well. On behalf of Boseman, his award was accepted by his widow, Taylor Simone Ledward.

With streaming services setting new records for nominations at this year’s Golden Globes, the variety of new content available for viewing is increasing with each passing year. Netflix garnered the most nominations at 42.

Making Moves: Get to Know Our Miss Jetset 2020 Runner-Ups

The international search for the next Miss Jetset proved to be yet another fierce competition in 2020 with thousands of dedicated women battling for the coveted title until the very end. After multiple rounds and millions of votes cast by adoring supporters from across the globe, it would once again come down the final few before our new winner, Janeilla Burns, was declared Miss Jetset 2020. Amid all of the uncertainty that this year has bestowed on the world, we’re honored and extremely proud of each of these amazing women who let nothing stand in the way of their relentless pursuit of the crown.

Naomi Ayotemi Somolu
Heart of a Lion, Soul of a Lamb

Naomi Ayotemi Somolu doesn’t merely boast the most marvelously alliterative name in the competition, she’s also the most nakedly ambitious. “I want to achieve supermodel status soon,” she enthuses. “I want to be sought-after worldwide to work with top designers, artists and photographers as I model the most beautiful high fashion and intriguing creations. I’m going to do it all.”

She has decided that 2020 is the year that she pursues her modeling career relentlessly. It took the Nigerian bred beauty a while to get to the point of unapologetically pursuing her passion. Initially, she felt almost embarrassed that after all the tuition invested in her college education at The University of Miami, modeling is what she chose to commit to. “For some time, I had actually convinced myself that I had no desire to work in the modeling or creative field,” she reflects. “I told myself that art and modeling are just my hobbies so it’s best to leave it at that. This really took a toll on me; depriving myself of the freedom to be who I’m called to be was absolutely depressing. I felt like I was willingly losing my creativity, passion, and subsequently my identity.”

Somolu’s identity deeply informs her world view. She sees herself as a global citizen and an ambassador for her country. “Being a Nigerian, Christian, aspiring supermodel is who I’m unapologetically proud to be,” she explains. “It’s way more than just money or fame to me, it’s about accepting my calling and making the absolute most of it irrespective of the challenges and uncertainties that come. It’s about enhancing the status quo for the greater good, starting in Nigeria, and progressing to the world.”

Her softer side reveals a passion for Christian ministry and charity work. In May 2018, the model and her mother Abimbola Somolu launched the Youth Speak Up campaign to aid in the mental and emotional enhancement of the youth in our community. The campaign events are dedicated to preteens, teens, and young adults who desire more insight and discussions on self-discovery, mental, and emotional wellbeing. In light of the increase in suicide rates, depression, drug use, and other societal ills, the Youth Speak Up campaign creates inclusive platforms and safe spaces.

“I love to engage and comfort people who silently struggle with internal conflicts,” she confides. “I hope to cultivate a society that is less judgmental and more receptive towards the development and expression of young adults, and so I plan to take this passion worldwide. Representation is so important to me. I want to use every platform that I can to reach individuals like myself who had a hard time accepting their unique appearance, quirks, and trials growing up.”

Jessica Palmer
West Coast Muse

Jessica Palmer’s enthusiasm for the Miss Jetset competition was absolutely off the charts. Not one to shy away from overdoses of excitement, she loves living her life at full throttle. “My favorite part of the competition was the suspense, she recalls. “It was nerve wracking, but the suspense made it fun. We all wanted the number one spot. All the ladies were beautiful and talented.”

The Los Angeles based beauty stood out for her confidence, poise, and keen sense of self. “I was very happy and excited to find out I made the finals. Jetset is very well known and has recognition from all over the world,” she reflects. “The competition gave me the opportunity to be a published model for a worldwide magazine. I will definitely use the exposure as an opportunity to advance my modeling career.”

The “Energizer Bunny” of the group of finalists, Palmer is always on the go. She owns a boutique called Yellow Muse where she models and sells her own private label clothing. Needless to say, we love her self-starter style.

Ghara Pike
Scene Stealing Smokeshow

Ghara Pike hopes the Miss Jetset experience will help to build her self-confidence, forge stronger relationships, and expand her network to prepare for her future. “I know that this is the beginning and the start of deeper possibilities in my life,” she responds vivaciously. “This is all the start of something bigger, and above all extraordinary and glamorous!”

Born in Barranquilla, Colombia, the fitness addicted Latina grew up in Canada. She often travels back to Colombia to visit relatives and keep the family bonds strong. Keen to explore and revive her Latin roots, she is also an avid fan of holidays in Spain’s Madrid and Tenerife. “In my free time I like to exercise,” she says brightly. “I love to keep active and work out is part of my healthy routine. I consider that a balance between mind and body is important. I also freelance in the movie industry as a background actress; it is a new, productive activity that I am liking very much.” We imagine this scene-stealer won’t be in the background too long, she’ll soon be ready to give the leading lady a run for the spotlight.

Melinda Berry
This Muse Loves to Get Behind the Lens

In her free time, Melinda Berry enjoys setting off with her camera, flipping roles, and becoming the photographer. The bodacious model is known to step out in Manhattan, exploring her new city and capturing people in their everyday element. Ever playful and social, she is also keen on strength training in the gym, YouTube vlogging, and volunteering at animal shelters or soup kitchens for the homeless.

“My absolute favorite part of the contest was having all my friends and family members help me raise money for an amazing cause, and seeing all the support and love. I lost my sister to cancer, so the B+ Foundation was the best charity to have my supporters donate to,” says Berry.

The chic go-getter has first-hand knowledge of the sacrifice it takes to make it in modeling. “The biggest sacrifice I had to make was leaving my family back at home in Philadelphia to pursue my modeling career here in NYC,” she confides. “Saying goodbye to my mother and siblings was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.”

Jennifer Jones
You’ve Got Mail

Jennifer Jones certainly looks essential to us. While she is not a professional model, modeling is one of her aspirations. The spirited beauty currently works as a postal carrier. “During this COVID-19 outbreak, I am grateful to help people in need of delivering their medications, checks, ballots, and other essential items,” she says with pride. “The postal service is America’s lifeline, and I can only hope that it will survive this pandemic crisis.”

Born and raised in a remote, countryside in the Philippines, Jones migrated to the US in 2012. She is elated to be part of a portfolio of so many accomplished women. “It was a tough competition, and I’m proud to be one of the finalists,” she muses. “I am very grateful for being part of this experience. I am also very proud that a fellow Filipino is the overall winner.”

Her favorite philanthropic endeavor hits close to home. “My mother died of cancer years ago due to a lack of affordable health care and advanced treatment in the Philippines. I would like to support charities in finding a cure against cancer, and to make it accessible to everyone, especially the poor in third-world countries.”

Chloe Hodges
Texas Belle

A natural stunner, when Chloe Hodges isn’t turning heads, you’ll find her hiking up a hill or pruning down branches in her garden. We love a woman who is at one with the outdoors! “I’m a hobbyist by nature,” she exclaims. “I love being outdoors, gardening, hiking, traveling.”

The Texas born beauty catches a high from her adventures in interior design, finding inspiration in magazines and vintage shops. She’ll be the first to restore and upcycle a piece of furniture, as opposed to discarding it to a landfill because it has seen better days. “I get a kick out of painting furniture and refurbishing old antique pieces,” she elaborates. “I love to build projects, and interior decorating.”

With a soft spot for animals and wildlife, Hodges loves to foster rescue animals. “I’ve rescued many animals,” she shares. “I’m always taking in animals in need of a loving home. One day I would love to start an exotic animal rescue.”

Jazmine Verstraete
Canadian Beauty

Jazmine Verstraete came into this competition with no expectation of making it as far as she did. “This taught me a lot about myself and what I’m capable of when I put my mind to it,” she emphasizes. “My favorite part was getting to talk with many new people and forming new friendships with competitors. They are all amazing women and winners in my eyes.”

Mental agility has always been her signature move. When asked about her most unusual talent, Verstraete replies, “I’m able to watch something done once, and then within one or two of my own attempts, be able to pull it off. I used to watch Olympic figure skaters on television and then go to the ice rink and teach myself to skate with jumps and spins.”

Verstraete hails from Edmonton, Alberta, and looks up to fellow Canadian and supermodel success story Coco Rocha. “My goal is to learn everything about the industry, make a name for myself, and pass along my knowledge just like Coco.” The smoldering brunette with alabaster skin can rock leather and lingerie with the best of them; we think this is just the beginning for this adventurous Canuck.

Beloved Canadian comedy series Schitt’s Creek took home a record nine Emmy awards in one monumental evening in September 2020. It received top comedy-genre honors for:

  • Best Comedy Series
  • Lead Actor (Eugene Levy, as Johnny Rose)
  • Lead Actress (Catherine O’Hara, as Moira Rose)
  • Supporting Actor (Daniel Levy, as David Rose)
  • Supporting Actress (Annie Murphy, as Alexis Rose)

Next up, the Golden Globes. While the Emmys are decided by television peers, the Golden Globes are awarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which is made up of just under 100 international journalists. Some of the categories (if nominated) that Schitt’s Creek could win are:

    • Best Comedy Series
    • Best Comedy Actor
    • Best Comedy Actress
    • Best TV Supporting Actor
    • Best TV Supporting Actress

There will be some tough competition here, particularly because in recent past the HFPA have chosen new favorites as their winners. Nominations will be announced Feb. 3, 2021, and the 78th Golden Globe Awards is set to air on February 28, 2021 live at the Beverly Hilton hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

One of the mainstays of the show was the Rosebud Motel where the iconic characters had to live once they fell from fortune. The owner of the actual building, Jesse Tipping, told Simcoe.com that he has the motel slated for sale sometime this year.

This location is not only a roadside attraction that draws daily visits from fans near and far, but it’s also part of a filming location database for television shows and movies. You might recognize the property in A History of Violence, and TV shows 11.22.63 and Umbrella Academy.

The history of the motel does not stop there. It was also a landing place for recruits of the Athlete Institute Basketball Academy and Orangeville Prep, of which Tipping serves as president. A few budding NBA stars– Jamal Murray and Kyle Alexander – lived there while attending Orangeville prep. Most recently, the motel was used as an Airbnb and was not-surprisingly consistently booked.

The building has eight mini-apartment-style rooms each equipped with its own kitchen and refrigerator, along with a three-bedroom home. Behind the property lies the salmon filled Nottawasaga River, which allows for some outdoor recreation like hiking, kayaking, and fishing.

The property will either publicly list or go on the private market this month, and Tipping tells Toronto Life that they are going to use the proceeds to support the Athlete Institute. Keep your eye out for further details about the Rosebud motel property at 308399 Hockley Rd, Orangeville, ON L9W 2Z2.

Schitt’s Creek ran for six seasons with the final episode airing in January 2020. All seasons are available to view on Netflix.

The Waiting Game: Movie Delays Due to the Pandemic

Since the first movie theater opened in June of 1905 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, cinema lovers have flocked to the theater to watch their favorite actors and actresses portray roles that have become pop cultural staples of society. Movie favorites such as The Wizard of Oz, Forrest Gump, and the Star Wars trilogy thrust us into imaginary worlds where anything is possible, while classics like Titanic, All the President’s Men, and Schindler’s List provide insight into real-life stories of the past.

Movie theaters were one of the first places that had to shut their doors when COVID-19 restrictions began. Even though they are slowly beginning to show life again, many big-budget film release dates have been pushed out.

No Time to Die

Daniel Craig’s next portrayal of James Bond will not be released until April 2, 2021, a year after the initial release date of April 2020. In this $250 million-dollar installment, Bond learns from old CIA friend Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright) about a mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist. Bond is faced with daring feats and treacherous landscapes as he trails dangerous new technology and a mysterious villain across the globe.

F9 (Fast and Furious 9)

The ninth chapter of the Fast and Furious saga drives onto the big screen in May 2021. The franchise has earned over $5B and has become a world-wide phenomenon. Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto is back at it to face a nefarious plot that threatens the world. Dom and his usual crew encounter an enemy that is as dangerous as he is skilled both as a driver and assassin, Dom’s brother, Jakob (John Cena). The action goes world-wide as both friend and foe return for another fuel-injected segment of the series.

Wonder Woman 1984

Gal Gadot is back as Wonder Woman as she faces new villains Max Lord (Pedro Pascal) and The Cheetah (Kristin Wiig) in this thrilling new adventure. With a record-setting $822M from the 2017 Wonder Woman mega-hit, all eyes are hoping Gadot can use her golden lasso to round up another box office hit. The film also boasts such star power as Chris Pine, Robin Wright, and Connie Nielsen. With a December 25,2020 U.S. release date, this movie will be the perfect holiday gift.

Black Widow

May 7, 2021 ushers in another female superhero in the form of Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. This highly-anticipated movie is another Marvel creation set to break box office records. After a year of waiting, fans will finally get to see Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow as she fights to undo a dangerous conspiracy linked to her past. The Disney film was originally set to debut May 1, 2020.

The Batman

One of the most delayed films thus far is The Batman, now set for a March 2022 release. The iconic role will now be played by Robert Pattinson and filming has been delayed on more than one occasion due to the coronavirus pandemic. With an unbelievable cast including Zoë Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, Paul Dano, Colin Farrell, and Andy Serkis, there is no doubt the film will be a record-setting blockbuster whenever it actually does hit theaters.

Top Gun: Maverick

This long-awaited sequel to the 1986 classic will get a July 2021 release date, pushed back from its original date of June 2020. Tom Cruise is back as the legendary Pete Mitchell aka Maverick. With thirty years of being the Navy’s top pilot, Maverick jets onto the screen to teach recruits the ups and downs of being an elite aviator. Val Kilmer is back as Iceman and the film features star power such as Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, and Miles Teller.

These movies have been delayed by the pandemic, but nothing will stop their inevitable box office success.

Miss Jetset Runner-Ups

2019 marked another impressive year of charitable giving from the philanthropic efforts offered by the annual Miss Jetset cover model search. Thousands of beautiful and talented women from around the world were once again presented with an opportunity to compete for the cover of Jetset Magazine, with Miss Enea Culverson ultimately reigning supreme. Yet, her journey to the crown did not come without adversity as this year’s competition proved to put each of our Top 5 Finalists to the test. And so it is only fitting that we honor each of these amazing ladies for their dedication, determination, and unrelenting desire to take their passion for modeling to new heights.

McKenzie Fraley
Looking for Magic in Every Moment

Originally from Scottsdale, now based in Orlando, McKenzie Fraley is currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in international business. She has also studied Spanish for five years; one of her major personal goals is to become fluent in the romance language. Jetsetting to the Royal Palace or Prado Museum of Art is her idea of a fantasy trip; she even dreams of the possibilities of immersion into daily life in Spain. Not merely content to trip out just for the sake of Instagram, she’s genuinely fascinated by the culture and history. Brimming with wanderlust, she takes inspiration from local events, markets and people’s homes. She loves seeing how people host one another in different cultures.

Fraley is grateful for the Miss Jetset experience pushing her to the limit, bringing bright new people into her life, while also invigorating friendships she thought long expired. This entrepreneurial minded beauty enjoys building relationships with modeling industry influencers and insiders. She’s always been interested in entertainment, both in front of and behind the camera. At home on a modeling set, she hopes to continue to thrive in the modeling world. Described as independent and driven through the confidence she exudes, Fraley has certainly made her mark in the community.

A big fan of the B+ Foundation, Fraley enthusiastically thanked her fans for supporting families dealing with childhood cancer. At one point in the competition, McKenzie started making a video to thank everyone. “It took three hours to make my two-minute video,” she recalls with humor.

“I wanted everyone to know I appreciated how they rallied for this vital and meaningful cause.” One of her greatest passions is fundraising for children with Down syndrome, so the charitable aspect of Miss Jetset was right in her wheelhouse. Staying healthy and giving back, even while surrounded by complex external influences is her daily mental and physical commitment.

A model wears many hats, no pun intended. McKenzie was a “role model” model in the process of gearing up for Miss Jetset. It’s takes grit and persistence to make it in this industry. Success certainly isn’t linear — it’s twists and turns spiked by highs and lows, often never the path you imagined. Letting her true personality, quirks and all, shine through, she’s learned to capitalize on what makes her unique. Cultivating a healthy sense of self is crucial to longevity in this business, and McKenzie has this in spades.

Wherever she lands, she’s driven to build a strong community. This was vital to many of our finalists, as modeling can often be a lonely journey. For the most part, candidates that were mindful and intentional about sparking a movement in their community rose to the top. By drawing on established bonds while igniting new friendships, our finalists become part of something far larger and more meaningful.

Jameson
Creating a Buzz

Dancing with fire, Jameson is used to sparking flames everywhere she goes. The accomplished performer got involved with fire dance through good friends living in Hawaii. Currently based in Las Vegas and St. Louis, she often performs with Hawaii Fire Artists, a fire dance troupe based in Honolulu that performs every year as part of the Burning Man Fire Conclave. Speaking of the Burn, Jameson’s passion for creating more than consuming set her apart from the competition. Raised in North County of St. Louis, the passionate nature enthusiast began Beekeeping two years ago, inspired by the lush forage available on her family’s property along the Missouri River. Who knew sustainability could be so sexy? Jameson is quick to educate anyone across the table that every third bite of food you eat is possible because of pollinators – bees, butterflies, bats, beetles. She advocates for conscious organic farming practices and pollinator conservation methods.

Earning a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Hawaii Pacific University, her studies focused on cross-cultural comparisons of social sciences and politics. A self-confessed lover of sailing, she thrived in a semester at sea, circumnavigating the globe. The trailblazing conservationist has an outerwear line in development, set to debut this fall. The inspiration behind her business? Faux fur may be PETA friendly, but it won’t biodegrade in a landfill.

Desiree Dillaman
The Hero of Her Own Story

Desiree Dillaman rallied like a champ to cinch her spot in the Top 5. “My favorite part of the Miss Jetset competition was having the chance to reconnect with lost friends,” she tells us. “People who I thought were not even my friends, were coming out to support in ways I never could have imagined.” Fascinated by the complexities of human nature and nurture, Dillaman recently received her Bachelor of Arts in psychology. Showing no signs of slowing down, the Atlanta based beauty will be pursuing graduate studies in clinical psychology.

Knight plans to leverage her Miss Jetset experience to raise more funds for childhood cancer awareness. She also plans to move forward starting a foundation for women who have suffered from domestic violence, providing free legal assistance and shelter. designer pets

A recent survey about pets of UHNWI’s (Ultra High Net Worth Individuals) showed that most tend to select either horses or dogs as their preferred choice. Nearly 40% have horses while 33% opt for dogs. Cats come up in third place at a distant 3.6%. Within these animal selections, pets range from purebred pups to hybrid mini dogs. There are also some super-rich who choose more exotic pets such as leopards, lemurs or lions as a companion. If you’re just not a dog person, consider one of the following more obscure playmates.

Alpaca

A native of Peru, Chile and Bolivia, the alpaca has become a statement pet of the rich and famous. This ultra- fluffy relative of the camel makes a great pet and loves to run, skip and hop, so there should be plenty of space available for these lovable companions.

Big Cats

While some large exotic cats are illegal to own as pets, they are still an attraction to the rich. White lion cubs, cheetahs and tiger cubs top the list for some affluent pet owners looking to snap that perfect social media photo showing their pet African Serval riding in their new Ferrari. Aside from their initial cost, it can take up to $10,000 a year to care for a pet of this magnitude. Mike Tyson’s pet Royal Bengal Tigers were taken to a Colorado shelter after it was discovered that he did not have the proper licensing to own them. Both Tyson and one of his beloved cats made a memorable appearance in the movie “The Hangover Part II” before they were separated.

Kangaroos and Wallabies

A wallaby is a member of the kangaroo family, but is distinctly different, especially in size. The wallaby tends to me much smaller than the kangaroo, but both have been known to be great pets. Vanilla Ice and his pet wallaroo, a cross between a kangaroo and wallaby, but he made headlines in 2004 after it escaped, alongside Pancho the goat, in suburban Florida.  Both were found and returned safely.

Lemurs

Kirstie Alley is all cheers for her pet lemurs. She has had over a dozen lemurs for a number of years and really loves the ring-tailed animals. She once tried to sneak one past airport security in a pet carrier insisting that it was a cat. With over 105 different species of lemurs, they come in a variety of sizes. Lemurs are extremely social and live better in groups or “troops” as they are called.

Micro Pigs

Also known as ‘pint-sized’ or ‘tea cup’ pigs, these diminutive pets are a great choice for a variety of reasons. They are the third smartest animal, behind the dolphin and chimpanzee. They are also hypoallergenic and are very clean. These social little animals love to swim and enjoy being around others. Celebrities from Paris Hilton to George Clooney have touted their pig prowess.

Whether looking to make a statement with a new exotic pet or just looking for a life-long and unique companion, you too can choose one of these rare, and expensive, pets of the mega-rich.

billionaire hobbies

Whether it’s snapping up housing complexes like motels in the game of Monopoly or collecting luxury automobiles like a matchbox car set, the elite have the world at their disposal. With art collections like that of a museum and golfing opportunities at the most exotic and exclusive greens in the world, UHNWIs hold unlimited choices as to what they can do and buy. Overall, though, the biggest hobby among the super-rich is giving back through generous philanthropic donations in hopes to use their wealth for the health and benefit of society.

Art Collecting

Pablo Picasso seems to be the artist of choice for most billionaires. The former Prime Minister of Georgia, billionaire Boris Ivanishvili, purchased Picasso’s “Dora Maar with Cat” in 2006 for $95 million. More recently, Steven A. Cohen, who runs hedge fund SAC Capital, paid $155 million for a Picasso. Founder of SunAmerica Inc. and KB Homes, Eli Broad, owns works from hundreds of artists, including Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Jean Michel Basquiat, and Roy Lichtenstein. DreamWorks founder David Geffen has one of the most noteworthy and expensive collections of art in the world. A collector of American artists, he once reportedly sold four pieces of his collection for an astounding $421 million.

Car Collections

Driving the world’s most luxurious and expensive automobiles is a fantasy to most people, but to the ultra-rich with a passion for speed, collecting cars is a more than just a daydream. Microsoft founder Bill Gates is widely known for his love for Porsche and owns an extensive collection of the German automobile. Indian business tycoon Ratan Tata owns a series of exotic cars, including Jaguars, a Maserati Quattroporte, a Ferrari California, and many others. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg owns numerous cars, but at the top of the list is his Pagani Huayra, a racy Italian supercar.

Golfing

Billionaire golfers are able to play the most exclusive clubs on the planet. Even with yearly memberships and joining fees to some clubs costing anywhere from $30,000 to $300,000. Charles Cohen, movie producer and real estate developer, built an entire golf course on his 39-acre backyard.

Philanthropy

With charitable foundations set at causes like fighting hunger and injustices as well as promoting women’s rights, Warren Buffett and his three children donate billions each year with a goal of eventually giving away 99% of his wealth. The second most generous are the Gates whose Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is the largest philanthropic foundation in the nation. With a focus on global health, U.S. education, and international development, the foundation has provided tens of billions of dollars for such worthy causes.

Real Estate

So the saying goes: You have to spend money to make money. When it comes to developing real estate, Hui Ka Yan of the Evergrande Group stands near the top of the list as one of the wealthiest real estate moguls, right next to Wang Jianlin, chairman of Dalian Wanda. Irvine Company’s Donald Bren ranks as the richest American property mogul. The Southern California investor owns over 60,000 apartments and hundreds of commercial properties.
