The Safety Advantage

Safety is a core value at Portland Jets, where the team’s rigorous training standards exceed typical industry requirements. Pilots and crew members undergo continuous education on advanced safety protocols and emergency response techniques. This meticulous approach not only sets Portland Jets apart but also gives clients complete confidence that each flight meets the highest safety standards.

Personalized Charter Management for Maximum Revenue

Portland Jets is focused on each client’s unique needs, balancing personal use with charter opportunities. This tailored management model allows clients to enjoy their aircraft without sacrificing potential revenue. By using sophisticated demand analysis and revenue-optimization techniques, Portland Jets maximizes booking rates and secures competitive yet profitable charter pricing. Repeat clientele and a reputation for exceptional service also contribute to a robust booking pipeline, ensuring consistent revenue generation for owners.

Added Value

Portland Jets offers end-to-end trip support for both personal and business travel, handling logistics like landing permits, ground transportation, catering, and customs clearance. This service allows owners to focus on their priorities, knowing all travel details are managed. For business flights, Portland Jets ensures confidentiality and efficiency, while personal trips are given customized touches for an enhanced travel experience.

Financial Advantages of a Dedicated Management Service

Outsourcing jet management to an experienced provider like Portland Jets offers substantial financial benefits. With access to economies of scale, Portland Jets secures discounted rates on essential services, effectively lowering operational costs for owners. Their deep industry knowledge minimizes compliance risks and costly mistakes, while their chartering strategies offset ownership expenses. For jet owners interested in maximizing their investment, Portland Jets provides the expertise and resources that make private jet ownership both efficient and profitable.

Making Aircraft Ownership Financially Viable

For new jet owners looking to offset ownership costs through charter services, Portland Jets recommends partnering with a reputable management company from the outset. By actively engaging with Portland Jets’ team to develop a strategic charter plan and staying informed on market trends, owners can unlock significant revenue potential.

Portland Jets’ comprehensive approach to aircraft management—through cost-efficiency, safety, revenue optimization, and superior trip support—transforms jet ownership into a financially sound, enjoyable experience. In the world of aviation, only military pilots flying jets like Lockheed’s F35 or its predecessor, British Aerospace’s Sea Harrier, typically experience vertical take-off and landing. The gravity-defying maneuver inspires a sense of wonder. Since vertical flight is usually the domain of helicopters, how can a fixed-wing jet go vertical? The answer is thrust vectoring, or the aircraft’s ability to control the thrust of its jet engines.

This is the technology underpinning the Lilium Jet, an electric jet prototype being built by the German aerospace company Lilium. By directing the thrust of its 30-battery electric motors, this zero-emission, electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL) can land on a helipad after soaring through the skies at 170 miles per hour. Lilium’s Head of Partnerships and Public Affairs, Matt Broffman, told Jetset that the Lilium Jet is for VIPs who want “to reduce their environmental impact” without sacrificing the experience of luxury private air travel. In other words, if you are working in Manhattan, New York and want to catch a concert in Philadelphia, a Lilium Jet will fly you and your party over New Jersey to a nearby vertiport in Philly, where it will tap into a liquid cooled charger.

Lilium is actively developing different versions of its Lilium Jet prototype, including a seven-seater air taxi variation and their Pioneer Edition aircraft: a five-seater version built for private ownership. The $10 million Pioneer Edition will have a range of around 90 miles and recharge in about 45 minutes, according to Broffman. The electric jet also has ducted engines that result in a quiet aircraft, making it ideal for navigating densely-populated urban spaces. According to Broffman, the Pioneer Edition is slated to hit the skies in 2026 as the company actively seeks certification with both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Aviation Safety Administration (EASA).

Earlier this year, a full-scale mockup of the Pioneer Edition aircraft was unveiled at the European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (EBACE) in Geneva, Switzerland. Set inside a white fuselage, the Pioneer Edition’s cabin’s interior is luminous with a minimalistic, sci-fi design. Separated by a door from the four-person configurable cabin, the cockpit resembles the flight simulators used to train military pilots. In total, the aircraft will be capable of transporting four passengers, one pilot and 200 lbs. worth of luggage, Broffman said. The mockup cabin will be “virtually identical” to those that will be included in the fifty Pioneer Edition jets set to be delivered to private owners upon the aircraft’s release. So far, the Lilium Jet prototype has successfully completed remote test flights and has its first piloted trial scheduled for the end of 2024.

In the meantime, Lilium is eyeing the Northeast, Southern California and Florida as its areas of operation in the United States. The company announced it will operate its network hub out of a vertiport attached to the Orlando International Airport in Central Florida, while also striking a deal with UrbanLink for twenty Lilium jets to operate out of South Florida. In Europe, Lilium will fly in both Britain and continental Europe—with the company building partnerships with charter companies operating out of locations such as the greater London area and France. Lilium’s partnership with UrbanV will allow the German company to ferry travelers around the French Riviera from a vertiport network centered around the Nice Côte d’Azur airport in Nice, France.

Battery Upgrades

The impending release of this electric jet positions Lilium’s eVTOL to compete with gas guzzling helicopter charters and luxury car services that have been the primary means of transporting VIPs between cities. Compared to other business aviation options like helicopter chartering, the Lilium’s 90-mile range upon release presents some challenges. Luxury helicopters running on aviation fuel, like the Airbus ACH130, cost a little more than three million dollars and have an operating range of around 400 miles. Lilium expects its batteries to become more powerful with each upgraded version.

Lilium is aiming for a yearly increase of 4.5 percent battery energy density, Broffman noted. That means the aircraft could potentially have an operating range of 170 miles in 2030 and 250 miles in 2035. He also confirmed to Jetset that owners will also be able to upgrade their lithium ion battery packs as new iterations are developed and manufactured. These new power plants will result in increasing the range and speed of the Lilium jet. Not only will passengers be able to travel farther on one charge, Broffman explained, but the speed of the jet will also receive a nice boost during its horizontal cruising flight.

The release of the mockup at EBACE 2024 represents a milestone for the company, Broffman told Jetset. It brings the Lilium Jet prototype closer to a realized aircraft, ready for its owners. This sentiment was echoed by Sebastien Borel, the company’s chief commercial officer, who was present as visitors and the media walked through the mockup of the Pioneer Edition model. In an interview with EBACE TV, Borel said targeting premium customers will get the Lilium Jet to the mass market. “We want to get sustainable aviation going,” Borel said. “People now believe we can actually replace a helicopter with our aircraft.”

The most exciting companies, aircraft and big-picture thinkers will be at center stage in Las Vegas in just a few weeks to redefine what’s possible in aviation and on-demand air mobility. The National Business Aviation Association’s Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA-BACE), taking place October 22-24 at the Las Vegas Convention Center and Henderson Executive Airport, is the world’s most powerful business aviation event of the year.

This year’s NBAA-BACE will feature a superb lineup of speakers, technologies, sessions and networking opportunities.

“NBAA-BACE is more than a meeting – it’s a moment, unlike any other, that allows business aviation to make the connections, share important announcements and come together to shape the future of the industry,” said Ed Bolen, NBAA’s president and CEO.

Attendees can get up close with some of the world’s most advanced, innovative and efficient aircraft.

The world’s leading companies paving the way on advanced air mobility – including Electra.aero, Joby Aviation and Lilium – will showcase their latest concepts and innovations at the show’s Emerging Tech Pavilion.

There will be keynote addresses by U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Administrator Michael Whitaker and Neil deGrasse Tyson, the award-winning and inspiring astrophysicist who is one of the most famous scientists in the world today.

Forward-looking newsmaker events will include a special session featuring U.S. Representatives Sam Graves (R-6-MO) and Rick Larsen (D-2-WA), key authors of the
five-year FAA reauthorization and aviation policy bill signed into law earlier this year. Five leading U.S. regulators from the FAA and Transportation Security Administration will also address the convention.

NBAA will award Bombardier leaders Laurent and Pierre Beaudoin with one of its highest honors – the Meritorious Service to Aviation Award – recognizing their visionary leadership at Bombardier that fostered industry growth and advanced business aviation safety and sustainability. Their leadership drove the creation of entirely new market categories for business and commercial aircraft and helped set the standard for excellence in safety and sustainability.

There will be timely discussions about the industry’s most important issues: innovation, sustainability, safety and workforce development.

eVTOL—electric Vertical Take-off and Landing Aircraft—Projected to Revolutionize Urban Transportation

By James Patterson

For as long as humans have wanted to fly, they have wanted to fly better. In the first instance of success, in 9th century Andalucia, the inventor Abbas ibn Firnas attached feathers to his arms, and glided some indeterminate distance “faster than the phoenix.” He afterwards decided a tail would have helped. Six centuries later, Leonardo da Vinci realized humans would need an exterior device to get off the ground, and sketched diagrams for the aerial screw and the hang glider. Not long after, in the Ottoman Empire, scientist LagârI Hasan Çelebi pioneered jet travel by jumping on a winged cone stuffed with 50 pounds of gunpowder. (Adding, in that way, crewed flight, along with croissants and vaccines, to the long list of “firsts” claimed by Turkey.) And so it goes on, through dirigibles and the Wright’s innovations, to autopilot and turbofan engines, the question in flight has always been “What next?”

If science fiction is the new realism, the common passenger might soon expect hovercraft or regularly breaking the outer-space barrier. Whether it’s the Jetsons, the Millenium Falcon or the police cars of Minority Report, the vision of aviation is one where flight is integrated into daily life in a way that is common, private and agile. Perhaps, then, the answer to what is next in aviation is the eVTOL—electric Vertical Take-off and Landing—aircraft.

Brandon Robinson, CEO and co-founder of Canadian-based aerospace company Horizon Aircraft, is confident the future of flight lies in eVTOL. “Properly conceived,” Robinson says, “these new aircraft can be very disruptive to not only traditional helicopter operations, but also traditional regional aircraft. The ability to bypass traditional delivery hubs will increase speed and efficiency in the marketplace.” There are currently hundreds of eVTOL aircraft (the name encompasses both all-electric and hybrid-electric varieties) at some stage of design, conception and use, according to the World eVTOL Aircraft Directory published by the Electric VTOL News.

As cities across the globe grapple with surging populations and escalating traffic congestion (another 2.5 billion people will be added to major cities by 2050), the space-saving element of eVTOLs is one of their key features. The ability to lift off as a helicopter does, without the need for runways, make them particularly adapted to navigating in (or over) congested urban environments. As well, both experts and investors have cited the incredible potential for the technology for fire, military, ambulance and military services.

Within the USA, Robinson points to the underuse of most aircraft infrastructure. “There are 5,000-plus airports in the USA, but 30 percent of them serve 70 percent of all passengers. eVTOL aircraft promise to enable better use of the remaining 3,500 airports, changing how we travel and receive goods.”

Passengers complete the idea, and commercial flights might be available as soon as 2026. “Many believe they are witnessing an acceleration toward the launch of the first commercial eVTOL passenger routes,” Robinson says, adding that substantial investment is already pouring in. In early 2024, New Delhi-based private jet hiring company JetSetGo signed on to purchase 50 of Horizon’s Cavorite X7 aircraft, with the intention of changing the scope of private flight in India.

As Horizon’s flagship product, the Cavorite X7 combines the versatility of a helicopter with the power of a fixed-wing aircraft. The wings of the X7 are uniquely inset with 14 lift fans that allow vertical take-off and tight maneuvering. Once at cruising altitude, however, the fans are covered by panels, allowing the X7 to fly like a standard airplane.

Besides the pilot, the X7 can carry six passengers up to 500 miles—the distance between Washington, DC and Montreal, Quebec. That range and capacity, plus a top speed of 250 knots, set the X7 apart—ahead—of other eVTOLs. On a further commercial front, its versatile take-off and landing abilities, plus its high carrying capacity—it has a useful load of 1,500 pounds —and ability to operate in both IFR and VFR conditions makes the X7 particularly useful for medivac and emergency situations.

eVTOL cabin image

The carbon footprint of the aviation industry is just as important for the emerging eVTOL sector, and an eye to eco-friendliness has been a key element of Horizon’s mission from the get-go. However, because all-electric powered eVTOLs are limited by the weight and scope of their lithium batteries, there is a trade-off to consider when considering range and function. “Some companies, like Horizon Aircraft, that perhaps have a bit more operational experience in their DNA, have opted for hybrid-electric power,” says Robinson. “This hybrid architecture enables novel, efficient configuration while still preserving valuable range, speed, and payload.” Running on a hybrid electric system, which charges the aircraft’s battery during flight, means the X7 is less restricted by the location of charging stations, and overall burns less fuel than similar aircraft making comparable runs.

The technology will come, lifting as it does, the capabilities and popularity of eVTOL. Robinson is realistic, but certain that change is coming. “Although many regulatory and technical hurdles remain before this vision can be realized, the future seems very bright from this perspective. The sector is poised for further growth as ongoing developments in technology and regulation create new investment opportunities in this emerging market that is set to revolutionize urban transportation.”

Commercial airline pilot, Captain Brian S., was executing a normal flight plan when he noticed smoke rising around him. What he didn’t know at the time, was that oil had leaked into the air conditioning system, blowing smoke into the cockpit. The situation turned critical within moments as the cockpit filled with thick smoke. In that instant, he and his crew were flying blind.

EVAS Smoke detection

How an innovative solution to a critical safety risk is clearing a path to safer skies.

Captain Brian recalls, “It happened all of a sudden, real quickly, and I couldn’t see my flight instruments. I had to put on my mask and goggles and the oxygen mask hose caught on something. I couldn’t lean forward and couldn’t figure out what it was caught on. I couldn’t see the panel, so I’m feeling around the cockpit by hand where the autopilot controls are. Until we get this smoke resolved, we can’t see anything in the cockpit . . .”According to FAA reports, there are an average of three incidents a day due to smoke, fire or fumes on aircraft in the US alone. With the proliferation of lithium-ion battery-powered devices (on average nearly 600 lithium batteries per commercial flight), there is a growing awareness of fire and smoke safety protocols in the aviation industry today.

VisionSafe’s Emergency Vision Assurance System, EVAS, is a Cockpit Smoke Displacement System that is available for installation via OEMs and aftermarket installation for airlines, cargo operators, corporate fleets and private jets. The EVAS safety system displaces smoke from the flight crew’s line of sight to their critical flight instruments and the windscreen, and replaces it with clear, filtered air via a bespoke Inflatable Vision Unit.

Hundreds of private operators, passenger aircraft and most global air freighters are already EVAS equipped. In all, EVAS has been installed on thousands of aircraft and has Supplemental Type Certificates (STCs) applicable to over 120 aircraft models.
Bombardier, Dassault Falcon Jet and Gulfstream have designated EVAS as an OEM client option, with EVAS included as standard equipment on select aircraft.

VisionSafe also holds EVAS certifications for Airbus, Boeing, Embraer, Textron and other aircraft. As the landscape of technology and travel continues to evolve, the prioritization of onboard safety measures like EVAS becomes paramount. Flight departments, pilot unions and government agencies are vocal supporters of safeguarding pilot vision during smoke emergencies, and currently, many aircraft have no protection against continuous blinding smoke. EVAS is quick and easy to install and provides a crucial layer of safety to address a serious problem: when you can’t see, you can’t fly.

Interior of Dassault Flacon 10X

Time drags on when you’re confined to a small seat inside a commercial aircraft. Sleep is elusive and your favorite Nicholas Cage film has only occupied 90 minutes of an overnight flight. However, for those flying privately in 2024, a trip from New York to London aboard aircraft like the Dassault Falcon 10X can feel like you’re spending the night comfortably in an exotic penthouse.

Dassault Aviation is one company in a competitive field offering purpose-built aircraft ready to host custom luxury interiors. In the private aviation world, given the space restrictions of a jet cabin’s dimensions, it takes a significant investment and talent by industry-leading designers to craft a truly exceptional concept. But when done right, the results are an enchanting atmosphere built around “the client’s personality, their way of life, and their own tastes and desires,” Pietro Scaglione, CEO of PINTO Design, told Jetset.

These premier interiors feature a thematic design tailored to the client: a bespoke approach to luxury private aviation. Multifunctional layouts mean flyers can use the lounge for business, rest or relaxation. Many aircraft include estate bedrooms, state-of-the-art entertainment systems, and lounges meant to accommodate whole families and parties of friends. Each cabin is an extension of its owner’s mission in life, with every square inch of cabin design carefully considered.

Some cabins seem otherworldly, especially the Mercedes AMG “Red Pig” concept, where the collaboration with Lufthansa falls on the more masculine side of the design spectrum. It’s a flying tribute to the attitude of the 6.8-litre V8 saloon-turned race car. The cabin is built for those with a high-octane sensibility, featuring blacks, greys and whites with red accents wrapping around a space-age cabin. Moreover, this concept honors the legacy of the high-performance Mercedes-AMG through “precisely embedded carbon fiber elements as well as a characteristic seat upholstery facelift,” the company said.

Many of the most compelling bespoke cabins, however, come from smaller companies specializing in luxury interiors, like France’s PINTO and the United Kingdom’s Design Q and Lie Alonso. Their work often results in clients making their jets into a second home. Sometimes, this means just creating comfortable, low-profile dynamic spaces. Other times, it means creating interiors with a pronounced ambiance and an almost palpable aesthetic. It is all about fitting the needs of the VIP clientele and their aircraft.

Flying Artistry

The Brazilian-born twin sisters of Lie Alonso are masters of atmosphere. Unlike the Red Pig, Valeria and Diana Alonso drew upon more rejuvenating powers with their “Ancient Future” cabin design that they created for the Gulfstream G650ER business jet. Guests entering the aircraft are greeted by a laurel motif that runs through the cabin. Silk embroidery on the sidewalls adds a special touch, with the cabin invigorated by ribbed wood veneer for the bulkheads and the grey chevron-patterned doors and credenza.

A pearlized finish and purple trim on the seats enhance the ambiance and serve to complement the resplendent furniture. Specially fashioned lights make the golden tones glisten, and the carpet, with its burgundy-purple hue, functions as the centerpiece of the interior, intended to evoke the Brazilian primavera flower, noted Lie Alonso.

Flyers aboard the G650ER will also find a private room in the aft part of the plane—a retreat for those seeking sanctuary. The lounge area in the body of the Gulfstream’s approximately 46-foot-long cabin, which measures over six feet high and eight feet wide, functions as both a work area and a place of leisure designed for a range of activities.

The goal, Lie Alonso said, was not merely to design an interior, but to make the interior itself a work of art, one embodying the company’s Ancient Future design philosophy: “Abundance and beauty are powerful aspects of our existence, waiting to be unlocked to enrich and celebrate our experiences.”

Dynamic Space

Howard Guy, CEO of Design Q, told Jetset that when his company broke into the private interior design game back in 2005, he found private aviation interiors seriously lacking. Instead of the dynamic cabin experiences of today, most private aircraft were drab and set in boring beige, with little thought as to how a VIP might want to experience space aboard a private jet, Guy said. He credits Design Q’s experience working with cars as giving the company the needed chops to create a “slick environment” in smaller spaces. He said he wanted to bring the same standard of luxury clients experienced inside a Bentley to the cabin of a private jet.

Today, Design Q’s work can be found within the Bombardier Global 7000 airframe. The Global 7000 is a state-of-the-art private jet with a range of 7,700 nm and the capability to fly near Mach speed with up to 19 passengers. The prototype mockup for the 54-foot by 8-foot aircraft demonstrates how a jet’s interior can be transformed into a dynamic cabin that ultimately functions as a home away from home for many of its VIP owners.

The Global 7000 mockup conveys a mood of contemporary business luxury. The layout features a stately bedroom with a king size bed, a bathroom straight out of a penthouse and an enclave designed for business and leisure, where passengers can view films in ultra-comfortable leather seating. Like Lie Alonso’s concept, Design Q focuses on fine materials like silk carpets and stone countertops. Lighting intensifies the ambiance with contemporary tones set against hardwood floors, as well as satin and gloss wood veneers throughout the cabin. Wood finishes and rows of leather seating make for the perfect place to conduct business before cracking open that champagne.

In the end, there’s no reason not to celebrate when flying privately aboard a Bombardier, Dassault or Gulfstream amidst the most captivating interiors the industry has to offer. Because “it’s a bit like theater,” Guy said. You take a VIP, “work with their character and give them something they have not seen before.” This results in a travel experience that is savored, not endured.

The idea of electric take-off and landing (eVTOL) machines is as old as the science fiction books and movies of our childhood. The technology began to really take shape in and around 2009 when NASA first used Distributed Electric Propulsion (DEP) technology in motors, batteries and fuel cells. This led major original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) like Airbus, Boeing, Honda, Hyundai and Toyota to push, test and advance the concepts to a place where urban air mobility is not only a feasible idea in 2024, but a workable reality.

Based on concepts and software developed and tested by Uber Elevate, there is a growing number of startups betting their future on sky-high interest in urban air mobility (UAM). There have been several companies developing the idea for air taxis with rideshare technology, hoping to expand on the early, single-seat prototypes.

Companies like Wing and Amazon Prime Air have been offering air delivery service since 2020. Other companies are using the technology for EMS, agriculture and heavy cargo transportation. Others like Archer are committed to air travel reimagined.

Archer’s Midnight urban air mobility (UAM) aircraft was designed to modernize the idea of the everyday commute. Capable of flying up to 100 miles, Midnight is optimized for 20 to 50 mile urban trips with a 12-minute charge time in between.

The new face of eVTOL is powered by six independent packs, each supporting a pair of electric engines. With speeds up to 150 mph, this new four-person plus a certified pilot machine can make hour-long highway commutes a short flight from anywhere.

These new machines have been built with safety, safety and safety through redundancy in mind. The aircraft’s avionics are equipped with four flight control computers, with inertia navigation, GNSS and AGL sensors to keep the pilot up-to-date on every possible piece of data. Not only that, each pair of electric engines has their own power source in case of any malfunction.

Archer has put in the time to back up their technology. Between 2018 and 2020, they recruited industry-leading engineers, completed over 500 sub-scale flight tests and secured Maker configuration and flight handling. For the last few years they’ve secured partnerships with United Airlines and Stellantis and flight testing with the US Air Force. They’re one of only two to receive certification for passenger-carrying eVTOL’s with the FAA.

The Midnight (UAM) is designed to handle up to 1,000-plus pounds of payload, comfortable for four passengers, their luggage and the pilot. The lightweight composite structure makes the sleek and stylish aircraft the perfect balance between weight and strength, with leading industry aerospace composites. The full airframe of the Midnight is made of carbon fiber, ensuring the structural safety and performance of this modern flying machine.

Safe, sustainable and quiet are only a few of the things urban air mobility users require. Midnight is designed to cruise at around 2,000 feet, making its noise level almost 1,000 times quieter than a helicopter. While in flight, the aircraft’s tilt propellers are aligned with oncoming air flow, helping decrease noise levels even more. This is also optimized through 12 small propellers and not one large engine, helping to secure safety as well as lower noise in the air and on the ground.

Midnight is all electric and Archer is on the leading edge of sourcing renewable energy, including sustainable seats made of “flax” fiber and other materials like recycled plastic bottles. The future of UAMs is not only comfort, cost and low noise, but it can be a part of the new way of using sustainable supply chains to help reduce their overall footprint.

The Maker flight test program has also made it possible for Archer to develop industry-leading technology and secure certification. These steps have allowed for the first purchase and delivery of 100 aircraft on their way to taking over the horizontal and vertical flight to success.

From their manufacturing facility in Santa Clara, California, the plan is to lead and react to the needs and wants of this growing area of urban air mobility. Their goal moving forward is to replace 60-to-90-minute urban commutes by car with 10-20 minute, back-to-back flights that are safe, sustainable, low noise and cost-competitive. All this with a minimal charge time of around 10 minutes in between. This will allow for future areas of growth as regulations adapt and the competitive marketplace takes shape.

Look to see more vertiports or urban air hubs as this exciting new trend takes off. Vertiports and their availability will be key infrastructure for takeoffs and landings, as well as supporting charging facilities, maintenance and passenger services in major cities. The future will continue to see more collaborations between industry leaders, government, urban planners and community organizations, as it will be a huge part of the inevitable growth in this industry.

Archer continues to lead with more innovation, safety testing and adherence to all new present and future regulations. Their commitment to making this Saturday morning cartoon dream a reality starts now with Midnight. What the future holds for UAMs is just beyond the horizon. So start enjoying it from the comfort of your low-noise and low-emissions aircraft the next time you want to be somewhere in a hurry. Don’t sacrifice safety, style or comfort—join the exciting world of electric take-off and landing (eVTOL) machines and live your dream of the future, today.
