Living Your Longest, Best Life: Forging New Frontiers in Longevity

Tech oligarchs are increasingly directing their attention, competitive drive, and considerable capital toward the lofty goal of life extension. It kicked off with Calico, a biotech company founded in 2013, backed by Larry Page and Google with the stated goal of “solving death”. Jeff Bezos and Sergey Brin likewise led the way; now a robust roster of Silicon Valley A-listers routinely fund longevity research. Oracle czar Larry Ellison has donated around $500,000 to anti-aging research. PayPal’s Peter Thiel was an early investor in Unity Biotechnology, which is devising therapeutics to delay aging-related diseases at the cellular level (the company raised $116 million in 2016). Can the tech industry’s obsession with optimization translate to our own biological “operating systems”— extending the human lifespan by decades?

The ultra-high-net-worth set turning 40 in 2028 may reasonably expect to be skiing Aspen’s divine blue diamond runs or playing singles tennis at 100. Silicon Valley billionaires raised on science fiction, emboldened by mass capital, envision a Star Trek future of everlasting quality of life. The masters of the universe as we know it have fallen down a rabbit hole of chasing immortality. In America’s wealthy zip codes, average life expectancy is about 88 years. Average Americans hover at around 66, due to genetics, diet, stress, smoking, pollution, and health care. As the growing cohort of high-profile “health spanners” and “immortalists” sees it, a baby born to affluent parents in 2022 could live to 150.

David Asprey, founder of Bulletproof and Upgrade Labs and one of the many tech giants consumed with life extension, famously declared he plans to live to 180. In an exclusive interview with Jetset, Asprey reveals ambitious new expansion plans for Upgrade Labs, what he calls the world’s first “human upgrade center.” Given a tsunami of inquiries regarding franchise opportunities, Asprey estimates over 100 franchises by the end of 2022, with international locations on the horizon. Currently located in Santa Monica and Beverly Hills, Upgrade Labs signed with its first franchise in Philadelphia, opening early 2022.

Scaling biohacking as an available option for global wellness devotees is no small feat. The intrepid maverick remains undaunted, “We all have fantasies of being reborn as superhuman, leaving chronic pain or old injuries behind. Upgrade Labs is here to bring these possibilities to everyone. Like Bulletproof, Upgrade Labs is my plan to upgrade human longevity.” Leveraging new technologies, including AI, the Lab helps members reach peak performance, recovery, and cognition. Seeking stronger immunity, reduced inflammation, increased energy, enhanced longevity, improved sleep quality? Asprey democratizes a trend once exclusively available to celebrities, pro athletes, and Fortune 500 CEOs.

“I’d made 6 million by the age of 26, lost it by 28 as my brain and body were failing, and I weighed 300 pounds,” Asprey muses, like a man who has evolved past dark wounds. “When traditional western medicine didn’t work, I found this incredibly rich ecosystem of innovations that no one thought possible. People didn’t think we could build the cloud, but we did. The rise of Silicon Valley titans who have exponentially more money than the generation of tycoons before us; we may as well fund the extension of life itself.”

Just as the FDA was able to move faster to bring Covid-19 therapies to market, we may reach an era where the FDA approves aging as an indication itself—rather than conditions associated with it, like arthritis and coronary disease. A growing number of geroscience health startups signal a clear shift in thinking; rather than focusing solely on the etiology of individual diseases, gero scientists focus on the largest risk factor of all: human aging. The goal is to hack the process of aging itself, staving off the onset of diseases associated with growing old.

If it were up to BioViva CEO Liz Parrish, the FDA would have a regulatory fast track that would allow doctors to adapt treatments that prove promising in animal models and administer them to informed, consenting patients. The lean, long and radiantly blonde captain of longevity sees no human expiration date. She’s ready to blow our lifespan potential wide open. BioViva’s Advanced Longevity Suite Blood Test gives you the most sophisticated data to make decisions that most benefit your health. Each biomarker is actionable, meaning the test reveals where your body needs attention most—expediting precision medicine, lifestyle interventions, or supplementation.

On a call with Seattle-based Parrish, she runs through gene therapy protocols with savant-like fluency. She’s been bold and brave enough to be “patient zero” in the search for a more meaningful lifespan. “I played my part in history, being part of the first gene therapies,” she reflects on her role in a series of 2015 experimental gene-therapies. “Every willing and informed citizen of this country should have the ability to access anything that could ameliorate or cure their disease if they’re out of standard medical options. What I did gave me hope for my son—I didn’t know if I would live or die at that point—that wasn’t important at the time; what was vital was that we spearhead the technology of the future.”

Humans once died mostly from infectious diseases. Then we developed antibiotics. Now we die mostly from the maladies of aging—cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s. Parrish is pushing for new regulatory routes that give terminally or chronically ill patients that don’t have a curative treatment for their disease access to more advanced therapies. “Right now, without changing our pattern, everyone on the planet would continue to die of the same diseases because of how slow the regulatory system works,” Parrish observes. “It’s a risk-averse system, a precautionary system. We need a pro-active system, one that runs alongside the FDA. This new class of biologics is light years ahead of current technologies. The biotechnology space is advancing so quickly; we continue to extend the lifespan of model organisms, but humans can’t yet benefit.”

“We’re starting to combine genes now that may have regenerative properties. Genetics will be the door openers for life extension in a much more meaningful way than just having a few more healthy years through lifestyle,” Parrish remarks with an infectious animated sensibility. “I am hoping it will be more collaborative as it’s exciting when big money starts to get involved, like Calico. Our company can do things that larger giants just can’t do. The aim is for the data to all work synergically to build better drug options and therapies for the future. At present, there’s room for everyone in this limitless space.”

We’ve all heard anecdotes of the nouveau biohacking elite who eat one meal a day, or in some cultish circles, one meal a week. For lesser mortals with mortgages and kids, fasting is extremely hard to commit to, hence the huge interest in “calorie-restriction mimetics” like rapamycin—all upside without the downer not-eating part. Enter Dr. Steven Gundry to save the day for the rest of us. Cardiologist, heart surgeon, medical researcher, and author, Dr. Gundry has converted millions to his utterly unique take on optimal human nutrition. Over a 40-year career, he’s performed countless pediatric heart transplants, and developed patented, life-saving medical technology. Speaking exclusively with Jetset, the good doctor elaborates on his philosophy that the digestive system needs key energy sources that may be sorely lacking in the modern American diet. “Disease begins in the gut; curing and treating ‘leaky guts’ has enabled my patients to make a comeback from a host of ailments and chronic conditions,” he explains.

Gundry is the Director and Founder of the International Heart & Lung Institute as well as the Center for Restorative Medicine in Palm Springs and Santa Barbara, California. His private practice at his centers has been a beacon for individuals struggling with physicians too quick to prescribe pharmaceutical band-aids. Gundry developed formulations like Longevity Max, MitoX, and Total Restore in part to allow patients to intervene to improve chronic inflammation before a disease diagnosis. “We focus on mitochondrial health because this makes up the integrity of the wall of the gut, very critical in keeping your body in balance,” he says. Designed to be symbiotic and synergistic with his Bio Complete 3 (a potent blend of premium probiotics, prebiotics, and a revolutionary new compound called postbiotics), his formulations are an arsenal of natural, diet-derived bioactive compounds in symphony with a nano encapsulated of butyrate, known as a “holy grail” microbial metabolite with a vital role in optimal immune function.

In the onslaught of plant-based diets, Gundry has a caveat. “Plants are both friend and enemy, a source of health and, in certain instances, triggers of disease,” he declares. “When major lectin-containing foods were introduced to our diet about 10,000 years ago in the form of grains and beans, our health dramatically changed for the worse.” His Lectin Shield formula of potent compounds eliminates potentially harmful proteins from interfering with your digestion, energy, and overall health. Whether from a financial investment or more personal improvement point of view, the longevity space has never been more ripe and robust.

As we finally begin to move beyond the pandemic, more and more countries have lifted travel restrictions. This makes it an excellent time to finally visit some of those idyllic destinations (Greece, Maldives, South of France) that were not open to travel for all or most of 2020. Nevertheless, things like mask restrictions, mandatory COVID tests, and long lines and delays at commercial airports have made the process of travel in 2021 more stressful than ever. Even something that used to be effortlessly simple as chartering a jet to Mexico for a few days has become a more stressful and complicated undertaking.

With these newfound restrictions and headaches that now inherently come with international travel, so comes new stress, especially when planning a family vacation. Luckily, there is a healthy, safe, and effective legal remedy for travel-related stress that can help make traveling far more pleasant: CBD. If you are unfamiliar, CBD is a chemical compound derived from the hemp plant that, unlike THC, is non-psychoactive and contains numerous proven medicinal benefits, such as relief from pain and anxiety.

What is CBD/How it Works

First off, it is important to note that CBD is not marijuana. People don’t take CBD to get high. What it does is vastly more scientific and far more medicinally beneficial. CBD works within something in your body called the Endocannabinoid System, a widespread neuromodulatory system that plays important roles in central nervous system development, synaptic plasticity, and how your body responds to certain stimuli (such as traveling to new and foreign environments).

CBD can be ingested in a myriad of different ways based on personal preference, from gelcaps and tinctures to balms, though CBD oil may provide the best effect for stress reduction. “When you ingest CBD oil, it stimulates your cannabinoid receptors, particularly a collection of CB1 receptors attributed with the production of anandamide (dubbed the “bliss molecule” because of the positive responses it invokes). Because of this, CBD can help eliminate stress, and leave you in a calmer, relaxed state when traveling” says Dr. Alex Capano, a cannabinoid researcher and practitioner with Jefferson University Medical Center in Philadelphia.

Additionally, another travel related ailment that CBD can be particularly helpful with is jet lag. “Jet lag is a circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorder that occurs when your 24-hour internal clock, known as your circadian rhythm) does not match the local day-night cycle, says Capano. “CBD can help by regulating natural hormones like GABA and serotonin to balance this cycle..iIt can also help decrease cortisol levels which creates that bloated feeling after a long flight and is also the hormone that convinces us to raid the hotel mini bar at 1am on our first night in a new city.”

And unlike with alcohol or most pharmaceutical drugs, CBD also has nearly no side effects. CBD won’t make you feel groggy or disoriented. The most common side effect would be sleepiness or fatigue, but that is typically limited to excessive use. So when using CBD while traveling all you need to prepare for is a healthy, rested, more peaceful vacation.

Make Sure You Have the Right Brand

Unfortunately, due to a lack of regulation and a massive boom in the CBD industry in the past two years, the market is now flooded with an influx of CBD brands, many of which are not created equal. Surely you’ve seen displays hawking CBD products at your local gas station or vitamin store, and the reality is that there is a huge variance in both quality and consistency in these products. That is why it is essential to seek out CBD brands you can trust, both for their medicinal value and integrity when it comes to CBD and THC content.

One of the most trusted names in CBD is Ananda Hemp. Founded in 2016, Ananda Hemp is one of the preeminent CBD companies and has built a reputation for only products that only adhere to the highest standards of quality control. Ananda grows all of its hemp in the pristine and idyllic rolling hills of central Kentucky, and rigorously lab test’s their products at ISO-certified laboratories to ensure they’re maximally potent and free of harsh chemicals.

Yes – It’s Legal and Safe To Travel With

When traveling with CBD, it is important to know that CBD is legal in all 50 states and that the TSA has given the green light for travelling with CBD within the US. When it comes to traveling internationally, there is more ambiguity as it relates to CBD. Some nations have banned CBD products while in others its legality is more of a grey area. This is why it is helpful to do a quick google search when planning to bring CBD products on your next international vacation. Thankfully though, dozens of desirable international destinations allow traveling with CBD, with many more on the horizon.

Five CBD-Friendly International Travel Destinations for 2021

Santornini

Santorini is one city that Jetset readers keep returning to time and time again and it’s not hard to see why. With its unique beaches, jaw-dropping sunsets, and white-and-blue cliff-top villages overlooking the caldera, this is truly one of the most majestic (and romantic) destinations in the world. Rent a yacht and sail the caldera or visit the volcanic islands and hot springs near Thirassia and Oia. Enjoy a romantic meal in front of your own private infinity pool at a luxurious resort like Astarte Suites. In Santorini there are no shortage of magnificent experiences, and with travel restrictions finally lifted in Greece, now is the perfect time to go.

Monaco

When it comes to luxury travel, few regions hold a fondness in our hearts like the South of France, and few places enchant like Monaco. With glamorous shopping, Michelin-starred restaurants like Le Blue Bay or Yoshi, and opulent resorts like Hotel de Paris (which overlooks Casino Square) and Hotel Metropole (with the newly opened Spa by Givenchy), there is nothing like the city they call Le Rocher. And with CBD completely legal in France, you needn’t worry about packing it for your journey.

Cape Town

One of the most stunning locales on earth, Cape Town has attracted jetsetters for years to experience the splendor and natural wonder of this jewel of South Africa. From breathtaking sights such as the Cape Winelands and V & A Waterfront to world-class cuisine from restaurants like The Test Kitchen or La Colombe, Cape Town is a truly must-visit locale for any discerning traveler’s bucket list. And with world-class resorts like One&Only Cape Town or the intimate, 11-room Ellerman House, accommodations are nothing short of spectacular.

Tulum

A long-time favorite North American destination for jetsetters, Tulum captivates with its unique blend of crystal-blue beaches, lush tropical flora and fauna, and ancient Mayan ruins. From world-class dining and unique luxury resorts like La Valise Tulum and The Beach Tulum, to the splendor of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and its world-class snorkeling and diving, Tulum is truly a one-of-a-kind destination in Mexico. And with the country’s recent CBD legislation, now is the perfect time to enjoy a stress-free trip down south.

Montego Bay

Jamaica’s second largest city has always been a go-to Carribean destination due to its pristine white-sand beaches, temperate climate, and ample luxury and wellness resorts like Breathless Montego Bay, Half Moon, and Sandals Royal Carribean. We find that Montego Bay possesses a unique charm that makes it stand out amongst other Carribean destinations. Plus, it is only a little over an hour by jet or commercial airline from Miami, making it a fast and easy getaway locale for a quick jaunt this summer.

Conclusion

In summary, more and more affluent travelers are learning that unlike traditional travel remedies such as pharmaceuticals, alcohol, and over-the-counter drugs, CBD is a safe and effective way to alleviate stress without side effects. And with CBD legal in all 50 states and dozens of desirable international destinations (with many more to come), now is a perfect time to utilize this effective tool and have a blissful and stress-free rest of your travel year.

Do you perceive that you’re living in the shadows of others? Or that you’re so busy trying to live the life that you think you “should” or “ought to” be living that you haven’t really thought about living a life that truly inspires you? Read on as I share more on how you can create a life that is your masterpiece—a one-of-a-kind, never to be duplicated or repeated life that is truly inspiring and meaningful to you while leaving an indelible mark on the world.

We’re not here to live in the shadows of others.

I had the opportunity to meet with a gentleman who’s a world-renowned painter who I commissioned to do a painting for me. It was a real honor to watch him at work and quite fascinating, too, because he would enter into a zone where I don’t think he was anywhere but in the painting. He was so present, clear and certain about what he was painting because he could already see the finished product in his mind’s eye. What he created was nothing short of a masterpiece.

I had another opportunity to see a true master at work many years ago in Mexico when my students and I came across a place where the famous black pottery had been made by the Rosa family for nearly a century. I will never forget watching Mr. Rosa create the most exceptional pottery from mud that he had scraped off the ground, adding water to it until it was the perfect consistency, spinning it on reversed coconut shells and imprinting designs with his fingernails—all while keeping his eyes closed. I remember having tears in my eyes as I realized that I was in the presence of a master who was creating a masterpiece—a master who saw a vision of the end product so clearly in his mind’s eye and then let his body create it.

Your forebrain versus your hindbrain.

I love studying the brain and find it inspiring to see how different areas of the brain react. Two key portions of the brain include the hindbrain and the forebrain.

Your hindbrain coordinates functions that are fundamental to survival—respiratory rhythm, motor activity, wakefulness, reaction, hindsight and impulsive and instinctual behavior. The hindbrain is extrinsic; it responds to external sources.

Your forebrain (the cerebrum, in particular) is where most of the important brain functions happen—thinking, planning, reasoning and language processing. This is the part of the brain that has advanced foresight capacity. It enables an individual to see something in their mind’s eye ahead of time and create it as a masterpiece. The forebrain is intrinsic; it is driven from within.

If you would love to make your life a masterpiece, you will learn to manage your emotions.

Warren Buffet once said, “Until you can control your emotions, don’t expect to manage your money.” Robert Greene, in “48 Laws of Power,” shares his view that the single greatest barrier to power or leadership is not knowing how to overrule and govern your emotions. So, until you are able to transcend, govern and neutralize your emotions so that they no longer dominate your life, don’t expect to live masterfully.

How does this apply to creating a life that is your masterpiece?

The executive area of the brain, the forebrain, is known for a number of capacities. It has connections to many different areas of the brain. This means that you have access to a potentially infinite supply of possibilities in your brain, instead of being limited to what you are seeing with the receptors of your eyes. So, instead of just receiving and perceiving what is in front of you, you can close your eyes and you can associate anything to it. The area of the brain that is activated as a result is where you have original and creative thinking.

In other words, you have the capacity to have the greatest inspired vision when you are functioning from your forebrain, which occurs when you live in accordance with your highest values or live by priority.

I’ve been teaching the “Breakthrough Experience,” one of my signature seminar programs, for 32 years now. What is interesting is that whenever I see somebody asking the right questions, transcending emotions, balancing out their perceptions and watching their executive center come online, all of a sudden they get a tear in their eye and they look up and you can see them seeing a new possibility. They suddenly receive an unborrowed vision.

It happens once their forebrain comes online.

The moment you are consciously living according to your true highest values, living congruently, living by priority, and living objectively, centered and present, your executive center lights up and you will tend to have inspired vision.

It is certainly wise to determine what your true and unique highest values are. Please go to drdemartini.com/values to do the FREE Demartini Value Determination Process, if you haven’t done so already.

I was blessed when I was 17 years old to have learned from a great teacher. The night I met this man I had one of those epiphany moments and I saw a vision of what I wanted to do, which was (and still is) to learn, travel and teach. It was so lucid and so clear that I later had it painted by a famous painter and it now sits in my office as a reminder of my primary mission and vision.

Once you have that clarity and keep your mind focused on your vision, it will allow you to incrementally refine your actions and build incremental momentum in the achievement of that vision.

That is how you make your life a masterpiece—by clearly defining what inspires you.

Every year, I teach a program called “Master Planning for Life.” The whole purpose of this program is to start designing your own unique master plan—almost like an architect’s blueprint.

It’s astounding to me that people will plan a trip or plan a house renovation but will very rarely plan their life. As a result, many people end up living by duty, by what they think they “should be” doing, “ought to be” doing, or are “supposed to be” doing, according to an external source and not an internal one. They will often tend to conform and subordinate to the world around them in an attempt to fit into the herd and not feel banished or abolished.

However, the master is not the one that is the follower.

The master is the unborrowed visionary—one who comes up with an original creation drawn from his or her own experiences and associations. That is the vision they follow—an intrinsic and not extrinsic vision, one that is generated in their forebrain and not by their hindbrain.

Your vitality in life is directly proportional to the vividness of that vision.

By prioritizing your life, staying focused on your highest priorities and delegating lower priority actions, you are more able to delegate and release yourself from things that self-depreciate you, scatter you and distract you. These reactions put you straight into the amygdala part of the hindbrain, which is impulsive and instinctual.

“Impulsive” means seeking things for pleasure and “instinctual” means avoiding pain, which are the two forms of distractions that divert your mind from being present and certain as a masterpiece creator.

However, the moment you prioritize and stay focused and centered on a clear vision, the strategic planning center in your forebrain is able to discern what it needs to create what it envisions.

I love sharing details of how the pulvinar nuclei in the thalamus (forebrain) act as a filtering and gating mechanism that filters all the various possibilities and allows you to extract the highest priority observations and sensations that allow you to create the wisest decisions. In other words, you have the highest level of awareness and potential when you live by your highest values and filter out all the extraneous things that distract you from achieving your vision. In doing so, you are more likely to refine your vision, look at the consequences that various decisions might have, mitigate any potential risks and develop a clear plan of action.

This will enable you to design a master plan to create the masterpiece that is your life.

Another key aspect of the executive center is spontaneous action. When you live by your highest value, you tend to spontaneously act towards doing it. For example, I spontaneously do my research every day. I don’t have to be reminded to do it.

If you need to be reminded to do what you say is important, what you say is important isn’t important.

In other words, you will tend not to sit and wonder about it or doubt it. Instead, you will tend to just take action because you can see it so clearly in your mind’s eye.

In the “Breakthrough Experience,” I help people create a “Love List” where they get to write down what they would love to create in their life. What is interesting to observe is that when people are really in the executive center of their forebrain, their writing becomes almost automatic where they don’t need to think about it or edit it—they just write fluently.

The degree of fluency you have in your life is based on the congruency you have.

When you set a goal that is congruent with your highest values, you are most likely to have fluency of expression, fluency of thought, fluency of action and fluency of speech.

The moment you write a “Love List” of what is truly inspiring and that represents your highest value that you see clearly in your forebrain, you are likely to not be able to write fast enough because it will flow so quickly. You may also have tears of inspiration and gratitude because you finally have clarity about what you would love to do. And when you do it, you will tend to spontaneously act because you can’t wait to get started on it.

When you are in your forebrain and acting on your vision and mission, time is transcended and has a new meaning.

I’m certain that you have those days where time seems to disappear because you have been so present and focused. When you extract out space and time from your mind and become present in an inspired focus and clear vision, and you can articulate in your mind’s eye what you are seeing, that is when you are most likely to be on your highest value and masterpiece path.

It’s almost impossible to be in that state without creating a masterpiece out of your life.

Why? Because you tend to expand your space and time horizons and create goals that are beyond your life. This is when you are most likely to create legacies.

It’s also almost impossible for the people around you not to notice you, because you exemplify what is possible. So, whoever walks the path of the master, lives congruently, and is willing to go after a vision that is unborrowed, will automatically give permission for other people in a chain reaction to do the same.

The key to creating your own masterpiece is giving yourself permission to be the authentic you, and not distracting yourself about how you “should be,” “ought to be,” “supposed to be,” “got to be,” “have to be,” “need to be” and “must be,” according to those living in mediocrity.

POINTS TO PONDER:

  • You are not here to live in the shadows of anyone.
  • You are here to stand on the shoulders of all giants who have demonstrated the exemplary status of positioning themselves in the zone where they are in tune, on target and on track with what is really, truly inspiring and meaningful to them.
  • You deserve to live an inspired life.
  • You deserve to have a life that is a masterpiece.
  • You deserve to have a meaningful, inspirational and fulfilling life.
  • It would be wise to allow yourself to be first at being you.
  • You are here to make your life a masterpiece.

Meditation: Even Billionaires Do It

Ever wondered if Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos have a secret “rule” to achieve their goals? There are some habits that most billionaires advocate to such as waking up early, having a routine, and keeping a healthy lifestyle. But there’s a particular practice that seems to be more and more appealing to the elite — meditation. Studies have shown that meditation can change the way you think, reduce stress and, overall, support entrepreneurs to make better decisions, which translates into success and productivity.

Meditation has been around for millennia. As a spiritual practice, it always had a notable role in Hinduism and Buddhism. But since the 19th century, these techniques have been spread worldwide and have also been practiced detached of any religion.

Forms and Techniques

In the Western world, meditation techniques have been divided in two main categories: focused or open. In focused, Transcendental and Metta meditation, the practitioner chooses meditations based on one particular object, idea, or mantra. In open, Shikantaza and mindfulness, the meditation is based on all mental events that enter the field of awareness.

Transcendental Meditation

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi created and introduced the TM technique and TM movement in India in the mid-1950s, but it became more popular after his world tour when in the 1960s and 1970s, it started to be practiced by celebrities. The practice is based on the repetition of a silently-used mantra in a specific way for 15–20 minutes twice daily while sitting comfortably with the eyes closed. The goal is to effortlessly reach a profound state of relaxation and inner peace.

Metta Meditation

Metta in Sanskrit means positive energy and kindness toward others, which is the reason why this practice, a type of Buddhist meditation, is also known as Loving Kindness Meditation. The practitioner will recite specific phrases that evokes warm-hearted feelings such as: “May I be happy. May I be well. May I be safe. May I be peaceful and at ease.” After directing this loving feeling towards you, you switch the subject from I to YOU, and direct a loving thought to a friend or a family member that has been helping you. Slowly more people can be visualized and included into the mantra. The session ends with the phrase: “May all beings everywhere be happy.”

Shikantaza

Although the Japanese term might be translated as “just sitting,” Shikantaza is more than that. It’s about reaching the awareness that is inside every human being from birth — like a child who is happy by simply sitting under a tree. Through this meditation, the goal is to reenter that natural childlike state while simply breathing with your hands on your thighs, back straight, and eyes closed.

Mindfulness

The core of mindfulness meditation starts by focusing on your breath and then observing your thoughts and emotions without judging them. Many like to practice it in a quiet room with their eyes closed but others do it even while doing activities, chores, or commuting to work. The ultimate goal is to shift the awareness to who we are and what we are doing instead of what’s happening around us.

Many successful CEO’s, athletes, and entertainers swear on meditation as their key to success; it might be worth a try.

Awaken Your Greatest Potential: Start Identifying Your True Priorities

Knowing what’s highest on your unique list of values or priorities and learning how to live by your highest priority can transform your life and awaken your greatest potential.

I have been researching and teaching in the area of personal development and human behavior since 1972, and out of all the principles and methodologies that I have been blessed to explore and study in that field, human values became one of the most significant ones. I have often been taken aback at how few books have been written on the field that I have found to be one of the most significant aspects of personal, or human, development.

Your highest values or priorities determine what you perceive, what you decide to do, and how you act in life.

Stop and think about that for just a minute—how and what you perceive, what you decide to do, and how you act is based on your highest values in the full set or hierarchy of your values. Your highest values filter your attentions and sensory perceptions of reality and help you selectively attend to and bias the received information according to the hierarchy of your values, or what is most important to least important in your life. Your inter-neuron decisions are based on what you believe at each moment will provide you with the greatest number of advantages over disadvantages, rewards over risks. And your intentions and motor actions will be most consistent with what you truly value most.

It is therefore wise to know what is truly most important, or what is truly highest on your list of values—particularly your highest priority.

Many people have unrealistic expectations, delusions and fantasies about what is important to them instead of looking at what actually is important and what their lives actually demonstrate.

In one of my most popular seminar programs I present, the Breakthrough Experience®, I have worked with thousands of individuals who say they have goals that they intend to accomplish, but somehow they don’t ever get around to beginning or following through on the very crucial action steps to achieving them. They will often not either initially act on them, act on them only half-heartedly, or soon give up, and they are then left with the perception that there is something wrong with them, or that they lack self-discipline. But, in fact, it is simply not truly as important as they initially imagined or fantasized about.

In many of these cases, I found that this was often a result of them injecting and inculcating other people’s values—people they have unwisely put on a pedestal and envied and tried to imitate—instead of honoring what was truly most important within themselves. So, they end up self-depreciating, beating themselves up, trying to live in other people’s values and trying to conform instead of standing out and being unique. Therefore, they experience futility more than certainty and utility.

Many people often say they want to do something they claim is important, but their actions don’t demonstrate that it truly is.

Your actions speak louder than your words. I often hear people say, “I want to do this, and I want to do that, but I just keep sabotaging it and not doing it.” My response to them is that it’s likely that they don’t consciously know what their true highest values are and what is evidently most important.

One of the reasons I put a complimentary Demartini Value Determination Process on my website is because there are millions of people who are wandering around thinking that they know what is truly most important to them, when their lives already indicate that they don’t—at least consciously. As a result, they often end up setting goals that aren’t really theirs, and then wondering why they are not fulfilling them or making tangible progress in their pursuit.

I often say to my students that depression is often due to a comparison of your current reality to a fantasy about how you or your life are “supposed” to be. Many people have fantasies that they are going to be or do something that’s not really as valuable or as important as they initially imagined it to be, which is one of the many reasons why I am inspired to talk about the importance of values as much as I do. This is seen every January with New Year’s resolutions.

Every human being consciously or unconsciously lives by a set of priorities or set of values or that which is most important to least important in their life.

Their set of values is unique to them. They are like fingerprints. Therefore, trying to copy somebody else’s set of values or priorities is almost certain to diminish your potential and result in your being second at being somebody else, instead of being first at being the true and authentic you.

There’s actually no competition to your true you. There only appears to be competition to people similar to you, maybe, but not the authentic and unique you. That unique set of values you live by does change over your life—you will tend to have different priorities and values when you are a child or teenager than when you are more mature or an older adult.

It would be wise to prioritize and structure your life around and fulfill what is truly most important to you at any one moment in time. Not narcissistically at the expense of others, but equitably and sustainably where you fulfill your highest values while you also simultaneously serve and solve the problems for others.

Your self-worth tends to go up when you live spontaneously by and congruently with your true highest value(s).

When you set a goal that is aligned with your true highest value, you’re most likely to be spontaneously inspired to act on it and have the highest probability of achieving it. You are also more likely to embrace whatever challenges you may face in the pursuit of it because when your “why” is big enough your “hows” take care of themselves. Your highest value can be perceived as being your “why” or most meaningful mission.

Your highest value is also what you filter your perceptions, decisions and actions by. It has been defined as the telos by the ancient Greeks, which is your teleological purpose or mission. So when you are looking for a sense of purpose and mission in life, it’s right there in your very highest value.

Your highest value or priority is what you are most likely to build momentum toward and excel at.

Your highest value is where you tend to be the most inspired, most spontaneously active, and where you are likely to be the most fulfilled and find the most meaning by. It’s also where you tend to be the most objective, balanced, resilient, adaptable, disciplined, reliable and focused and expanded in awareness and potential. It’s also where you tend to expand your space and time horizons, open the doors for expanded opportunities, and play in a bigger field of possibility.

When you’re unwisely attempting to live according to other’s values through imitating or conforming and not living by your own true highest values, it is most often due to making inequitable comparisons between yourself and others more so than by comparing your own actions to your own highest values.

The moment you minimize yourself and compare yourself to other people, thinking with admiration that they have or do something more than yourself, then you put them on a pedestal and yourself in the pit, in turn. You’ll exaggerate them and minimize you and you’ll likely inject some of their values which will cloud the clarity of your own highest value or inspired mission of service and fulfillment.

Values flow in society from those who have the most power to those with the least power, perceptually. So, the second you minimize yourself and inject other’s values, you’re likely to cloud the clarity of your own highest values. This is when you can begin feeling uncertain and give your natural intrinsic power away to others. Then the more uncertain you feel, the more you will tend to offload your decisions back to the people that you give your power to.

You might also compare yourself to other people and feel proud and superior to them, and then try to project your own values onto them.  Both injecting values from others, or projecting values on to others are impossible to sustain—trying to live in other people’s values or trying to get them to live in yours long-term is futile.

You have a natural inclination to want to be authentic and to be loved and appreciated for who you are and so do they. And your identity revolves around and is an expression of your highest value and so, too, for others.

Any time you are not living by your highest values and try to live by other people’s values you envy or admire, it can result in internal conflict. Many psychological conditions emerge out of such an internal conflict between what you think you “should” be doing, “ought” to be doing, “supposed” to be doing, “need” to be doing, “have’ to be doing, and “must” be doing that result from other people’s expectations and values, instead of your own, or what they “should” be doing in turn.

It is wiser to:

  • Know what your true highest value is and give yourself permission to live congruently according to whatever that is daily;
  • Structure your life by priority and do the highest priority daily actions that serve the greatest number of people that also compensate you financially in return in fair exchange; and
  • Fill your day with high-priority actions that inspire you, instead of with low-priority distractions that don’t.

It is wiser to know yourself and be yourself, so you can get to love yourself.

New Year’s Resolutions: 2021 Looks a Lot Different Than 2020

Does the coming new year feel a little different to you than years’ past, where we have vowed to save money, meditate, spend more time with family, be humbler, and find some time for yourself?

2021 New Year’s resolutions look a lot different:

  • Spend money
  • Take a vacation with friends
  • Up your exercise game (that one never goes out of style)
  • Spend less time alone
  • Enlighten your ego (actually get dressed, wear makeup, and take better care of your skin)

During quarantine, we were shut off from the world and slacked off on some really important things: our health, our happiness, and our wellbeing. While we still have a way to go before things get back to normal (or a new normal as ‘they’ say), this new year could not have come at a better time.

Spend money

Sadly, many people lost their jobs, were furloughed, or saw less clientele in the trenches of the pandemic. But, fortunately, many people did not. They were able to save money as they saw an increase in business depending on how essential it was or just managed to stay above water. In the new year, many people will go back to work. This will be the time to rebuild our local businesses. One popular 2021 New Year’s resolution is to spend money at local restaurants, boutiques, handyman shops, barbers, nail salons, flower shops, bookstores, record stores, farmer’s markets, gyms, nurseries, bike shops … you get the picture.

Take a vacation

I don’t know about you, but I sure did miss my friends this year. We all got plenty of time with the immediate family as we lived, worked, and played on top of each other for almost a year. Now, who is ready to gather their gal pals and get on the road again supporting small local businesses along the way. I see a trip to Las Vegas, San Diego, NYC, Tampa, Boston — somewhere with the bustle of life we all missed in 2020.

Exercise

Yes, this might be the most popular New Year’s resolution of all every year, and it does not change now. But it might look a little different. Many people have steered clear of big gym chains (some were closed, and some were just scary) and purchased home equipment like the Peloton and Mirror but lost interest after a few weeks. Once businesses begin opening again, many people will be resolute to support small businesses and join the local Jabz or TruHit gym, because these businesses took a beating too. And if they were strong enough to survive, then we are strong enough to support them and a new exercise routine.

Spend less time alone

2020 saw resolutions vowing to find some time for yourself, meditate, and get into nature. Well, that’s great and all but, been there, done that. In 2021, people are planning on spending more time with people — their parents, grandparents, aunts, friends, vendors, friends of friends, neighbors, etc. We’ve had plenty of time alone to bask in ourselves. Now it’s time to get out and socialize.

Enlighten your ego

For me, personally, I never did lay around in jammies all day and not put makeup on, but many women across the world did. So, this coming year, they are ready to get dressed up, put on some makeup, clean their skin, and feel beautiful again.

Some of our favorite products to help get your smooth, glowy skin back:

The Ritual Kit is a 28-day skin cycle starter kit that will seriously change your life. 2021 is right around the corner and there is a light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel — no matter how long that tunnel may be. Let’s keep our chin up and look forward to a new year full of new opportunity.

High-End Home Gyms: Top-Notch Exercise Equipment for Home Workouts

Every workout buff or yoga enthusiast knows that the key to staying in peak physical condition is maintaining a consistent, rigorous exercise regimen. Because gyms continue to be hard hit by the ongoing pandemic, one solution is to transition to a home workout, eliminating the need for high-end memberships altogether.

But not all home exercise equipment is the same, so dedicated weightlifters and cardio enthusiasts have to do their research and mull over their purchases carefully. With the right exercise machines, working out at home can yield comparable results to even the best gyms, keeping your physique in peak condition. These state-of-the-art exercise machines provide optimal user experience and can turn home workouts into serious muscle-building sessions.

Hock DISKUS Dumbbells Sets

Hock’s DISKUS series of dumbbells combines top-notch quality with high-end aesthetics. Accented with stained walnut wood and a sturdy aluminum frame, these dumbbells come in a variety of weights and are stored on an attractive, heavy-duty rack. While some want to conceal their home gym equipment, Hock’s designs are meant to be showcased, and the rack’s clever storage prevents users from crushing their fingers while putting the weights away. The sleek stand base is made of stainless steel, giving this equipment a modern look. They are the classiest—and some of the priciest—dumbbells on the market, perfect for making quick and considerable gains.

Technogym Skillmill Connect

The Technogym Skillmill Connect is more than a treadmill for hanging damp laundry out to dry. It is a serious piece of Olympic-grade equipment, meant for full-body exercise and training high-performance athletes. The Skillmill Connect allows runners not only to build strength in their legs and lower abdominals but also to increase their overall agility and endurance, working every region of the body. The equipment itself is sleek, stylish, and safe, and it comes equipped with a full library of training videos to keep users motivated while testing out new activities. For improving muscular coordination, there’s no better machine on the market; its versatility makes for the perfect addition to any runner’s home gym.

Peloton Bike+

When it comes to high-end exercise bikes, no brand has made a bigger name for itself than Peloton. The company’s state-of-the-art exercise bikes are sleek and user-friendly, versatile, and highly sought-after, and the company recently released an upgraded version of their classic model with new features. The Peloton Bike+ comes with a 23.8-inch rotating HD touchscreen and a four-speaker sound system so that users can stream exercise routines in high-fidelity sound. It also includes a digital resistance system that logs users’ metrics and adjusts workout routines automatically. By also enabling users to sync their Apple Watches with the bike, Peloton has continued to supply its subscribers with cutting-edge features that revamp their exercise regimens and produce amazing results.

Waterrower

Designed to replicate the calming sensation of rowing a boat, the Waterrower exercise machine comes in a gorgeous eco-friendly wooden design that is both stylish and easy to store. Unlike many other rowing machines, the Waterrower is elegant and portable, yet it works around 84 percent of your muscle mass, amounting to a fun, high-intensity workout. The specially engineered WaterFlywheel simulates the movement, sound, and resistance of steering a boat through water, and with its adjustable footrests and easy-grip handle, this machine is an absolute pleasure to use. All of the materials in its construction are American-made and the company adheres to strict environmental standards, making the Waterrower a smart, sustainable addition to your home gym.
