Daymond John: From humble beginnings to soaring success

In the pantheon of entrepreneurial legends, one name soars high above the rest: Daymond John, a titan whose journey from Shark Tank to the skies is a masterclass in relentless ambition. When you think success, think Daymond John—household name, pioneering powerhouse and the embodiment of the American dream. As a “Shark,” investor, entrepreneur, motivational speaker and let’s not forget New York Times best-selling author, Daymond John doesn’t just walk the walk; he takes flight, leaving a jet stream of inspiration in his wake. His life, an exhilarating tapestry of roles—visionary, husband, father—exemplifies a balance most dare only to dream of.

With each private jet ascent, Daymond charts a course in calculated business acumen, offering an arsenal of CEO wisdom that transforms the ordinary into extraordinary. His words, charged with the energy of a relentless spirit, echo through boardrooms and family rooms alike: “I’m hungrier now than ever before to the point where my poor staff is like ‘what the hell is wrong with this guy?’” This hunger fuels not just a personal legacy, but a commitment to propel others to dizzying heights of success. In the world of Jetset Magazine, where luxury meets legacy, Daymond John isn’t just a feature; he’s a force, a mentor guiding others through the stratosphere of possibility, driven by family, focused on health, and forever reaching for the stars.

From truly humble beginnings in Queens, New York, John grew up in a single-parent household, where his mother worked multiple jobs to make ends meet. With limited resources, he had to be resourceful and innovative from an early age. His entrepreneurial spirit ignited when he was just 10 years old, selling handmade pencil cases on the streets of Queens. This early experience sparked his passion for business. He later founded FUBU (For Us, By Us), a clothing brand that began in his mother’s basement. It was all about streetwear and reflected the urban culture he was a part of. John’s big break came when he and his friends mortgaged their homes to secure funding for FUBU. The brand gained recognition when it was featured in a music videos and worn by top hip-hop artists. It quickly became a fashion sensation and a symbol of urban style.Daymond John graces the cover of Jetset Magazine's first issue of 2024.

His journey to becoming a “Shark” on Shark Tank is equally inspiring. John’s reputation as a fashion mogul and entrepreneur caught the attention of the show’s producers. He joined the cast in its first season and brought his business acumen to the table. His “Shark” persona is a testament to his incredible success and his ability to spot lucrative opportunities. John’s rise from a modest upbringing to becoming a renowned entrepreneur and investor is a true symbol of his determination, creativity and perseverance. He continues to inspire aspiring entrepreneurs around the world through his work on Shark Tank, the numerous entrepreneurial ventures detailed later in this story, and his motivational speaking engagements. John’s story is a shining example of the American dream realized, and he’s undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with in the world of business.

On the topic of private jet travel, John shared some excellent points about the benefits. “It’s not just about the luxury and convenience, although those aspects are certainly enticing. Private jet travel offers a level of productivity that’s hard to match with commercial flights.” When you have a busy schedule like John, every minute counts. Commercial flights often come with long check-in lines, security checks and the general hassle of navigating crowded airports. With a private jet, you can skip all of that and board your plane directly, saving valuable time. As John explains, “a six-hour flight from New York to Vegas can be incredibly productive when you have the privacy and comfort of a private jet.”

As you gain experience and maturity, the real value of private jet travel lies in its efficiency, safety, and the ability to focus on what truly matters. As John states, “When you start to realize what’s important to you, the need for private travel is a different need. With the ever-changing, fast-paced business world and managing multiple businesses, staying ahead of the competition is key.”

In the end, private jet travel is about more than just luxury; it’s about optimizing your time and resources to achieve your goals efficiently. John emphasizes, “That’s why I’m actually here. Because all of us true leaders constantly keep educating ourselves and what is most important is being around other people.” John is convinced that remote work and virtual meetings are ineffective, as they tap into merely 20 percent of the staff’s potential. So, whether you’re a seasoned entrepreneur like John or someone aspiring to reach new heights, private jet travel, with the opportunities it affords for face-to-face meetings, can be a valuable asset in your journey towards success.

In an interesting conversation, John mentions that a major global bank once approached him with an offer of a $2 billion credit line. The bank wanted him to oversee the absorption of various minority-owned companies. Resisting a 15–20-year commitment despite the attractive offer, John also declined to take over a hotel company because it would have required a significant long-term commitment. He considered the impact on his personal life, especially with his young daughter and previous personal experiences. Reflecting on the purpose of business, John emphasizes the importance of understanding why you’re in business. “Many people in business don’t realize their true motivations until they reach a certain point. Business should have a purpose, ideally creating positive change.”

Entrepreneurship is a journey that demands not only great ideas but also a unique set of skills and tools. Gleaning insights from seasoned entrepreneurs like John we uncover indispensable traits that every entrepreneur should cultivate to thrive in today’s competitive landscape.

John highlights the importance of entrepreneurs having resilience, in terms of developing a strong rejection muscle. He argues that rejection, often seen as a setback, is actually a steppingstone towards innovation. Each “no” should be viewed as an opportunity to refine your approach and improve your offering. John declares, “The better entrepreneur you are, and the more innovative you are, the more you are going to get rejected.”

Harnessing common sense and thoughtful decision-making is also significant in entrepreneurship. While theoretical knowledge and business plans are important, John emphasizes the need to apply practical wisdom to each decision. “Everything that may look good on paper doesn’t always translate into success in the real world.”

When it’s all said and done, it’s important for entrepreneurs to cultivate their sense of empathy and vulnerability. These traits are essential in understanding the root of a problem or the essence of a customer’s need, making it easier to create solutions that resonate with people. John suggests that without these traits, entrepreneurs risk alienating themselves from the very people they aim to serve.

Beyond John’s FUBU fame, he focuses on building a lasting legacy, championing financial wellness and entrepreneurial success. He leads the Rise Nation Mastermind, connecting high-earning entrepreneurs for peer guidance and tackling advanced business challenges like employee retention and leveraging AI. Additionally, he selectively mentors top CEOs, emphasizing not just business growth but also philanthropic impact.

Passionate about financial literacy, John emphasizes the need for accessible financial education in America. He highlights the underutilization of available resources and the importance of teaching children about money management to address societal issues like debt and poor health choices. His book, “Little Damon Learns to Earn,” targets young audiences to instill early financial habits, tackling the ripple effects of predatory marketing and financial instability.

John’s philosophy balances building ego with nurturing the soul. He leverages his influence to educate both the young and entrepreneurs, aiming for a financially-aware future generation. This holistic approach unites his business endeavors and educational efforts, striving for broader societal improvement and financial security for all.

John also recently ventured into the health and wellness sphere, marking a new chapter that reflects his commitment to a well-rounded, balanced life. Acknowledging a personal revelation, John shares, “Post-COVID, I found myself numbing the edge a bit too often. That’s when I stopped drinking and shifted to natural methods for stress and weight management.” His pivot towards promoting overall well-being is not just a testament to his character, but a poignant reminder that true success encompasses far more than financial gain.

At 54, John’s vitality is a testament to his lifestyle changes. This rejuvenation is partly fueled by his personal life, including the youthful energy brought by his seven-year-old daughter and the support of his wife, whose presence serves as a continuous inspiration. Now, more than ever, he’s driven to stay healthy and present in his daughter’s life. With the dream of one day walking her down the aisle, Daymond says, “that’s part of what legacy is about—it’s not just about wealth.”

John’s journey is a true inspiration, reminding us all that success is attainable through hard work, calculated risks, helping others and a dedication to personal well-being. We encourage our readers to follow in his footsteps, embracing entrepreneurship with passion and resilience while also prioritizing their own health and wellness. John’s story is a beacon of motivation, proving that with the right mindset, anything is possible in the world of business and beyond.

Ladies and gentlemen, fasten your seat belts because we’re about to take off on a high-altitude journey through the life of American actor Jim Caviezel. No turbulence here, just a first-class voyage through the career of a man who defies gravity, embodying roles that soar to astonishing emotional heights. From the celestial chorus of angelic voices in “The Passion of the Christ” to the echoes of human dignity in “Sound of Freedom,” Caviezel is the pilot navigating us through cinematic skies that might otherwise go unexplored.

From the basketball court to the limelight, Jim Caviezel’s pivot to acting was no accident. Well, except for the foot injury that thwarted his hoop dreams. Yet, in that very twist of fate, a calling was heard—loud and clear. Inspired by the legendary Jimmy Stewart, Jim discovered a path where he could still perform—just in front of a camera rather than on a court. “I believe God stepped in and instilled the calling to act,” Caviezel said. “I auditioned for Juilliard and got in, but never attended because I booked a job before classes started.”

Now let’s throttle to full as we veer towards an emotional rollercoaster ride courtesy of Alejandro Monteverde’s movie “Sound of Freedom.” Starring Jim Caviezel as real-life American hero Tim Ballard, the film takes on the disturbing subject of global sex trafficking. Released, appropriately enough, on America’s birthday in July 2023, this movie packs a punch, just like the fireworks you’d expect on the Fourth.

Now, let’s rewind. Picture this: the film was done and dusted in 2018 but got lost in the Hollywood shuffle when Disney swallowed up 20th Century Fox like a mouse nibbling cheese. Shelved, but not forgotten, the film was resurrected like a phoenix. The filmmakers reacquired the rights and took the bold move to go with Angel Studios for distribution. Pros? Creative freedom and a direct line to a thirsty audience. Cons? Limited theater presence and initial eyeballs.

As for the film itself, it delivers a gut-wrenching yet inspiring take on Ballard’s quest to rescue children from trafficking. It’s a heartbreaking, pulse-pounding narrative that leaves you questioning, “How is this still a thing in 2023?” Despite its distribution hiccup, the film found its audience, raking in both critical acclaim and some sweet box office numbers.

In a world that too often turns a blind eye to uncomfortable truths, “Sound of Freedom” serves as a blaring wake-up call. It tackles the underbelly of society and makes you want to stand up and do something—anything—to stop this current global menace. Go on, grab your popcorn, but don’t expect to sit back and relax; this is a film that demands your attention and your action.

But let’s not overlook that monumental role that steered Jim’s career towards the stratosphere—playing Jesus in “The Passion of the Christ.” Just like a jet breaking the sound barrier, this role shattered expectations, elevating Jim to an iconic status. The role was transformative, not just for the viewers but for Jim himself, reminding us all that acting can be a celestial calling. The film ignited conversations, broke box-office records, and even stoked the embers of controversy. But why? Because it was more than a movie; it was a mirror reflecting societal ethos and moral questions. And through it all, Caviezel’s performance was not merely acting; it was an act of dedication to a story larger than life.

Jetset asked Caviezel how portraying such an iconic figure as Jesus impacted his personal and professional life. “The Passion” made me pretty recognizable around the world,” Caviezel explained. “And with that notoriety, you end up becoming more protective of your family, your time, and that also colors your future endeavors because you’ve just starred in the most important biography ever . . . how do you top that? I do think some people in the film community had a hard time deciding how to use me after “The Passion.” But fortunately for me, afterwards I was able to make projects like “Déjà Vu” with Tony Scott and Denzel Washington and “Person of Interest” which allowed audiences to remember that prior to “The Passion,” they enjoyed me in “The Count of Monte Cristo” and “The Thin Red Line,” roles that were embraced early in my career.

Jetset asked Caviezel if he could share any memorable experiences or challenges he faced while preparing for a specific role. He described one that turned out to be life changing. “While shooting “The Passion,” not only was I struck by lightning, but I also dislocated my shoulder. So here I am, being hoisted up to hang on the cross. I’ve got to remove the sling and they’re stretching my arms, so I say, ‘Ok God, this is where I need a hug to stay up here because this hurts like crazy!’ He definitely did lift me up because there was no way my shoulder would have held up. I was a true believer before but was a confirmed one after that grueling day.”

Jim Caviezel standing in front of Jetset's plane with his hand over his heart.

Caviezel says that both “The Passion” and “Sound of Freedom” challenged him as an actor. “Both films gave me the chance to play individuals who stood for only good and who were willing to make extreme sacrifices to try to help others, literally rescuing them. It creates a humbling effect to carry the magnitude of these roles and I hope that I might have the courage in my life to make the right decisions, too, when tested.”

Jim Caviezel smokes a Cohiba Cigar.

As we cruise through Caviezel’s storied career, let’s not forget the co-pilot in his life—his loving wife Kerri Browitt Caviezel. Beneath the roles and the fame is a family man. The duo is raising three adopted kiddos, all who’ve faced the heavy diagnosis of cancer. But let’s be clear, the Caviezels are no understudies in the theater of parenthood; they’re headlining the act with relentless love and commitment.

As for what’s next on Caviezel’s radar? “I’m looking forward to making more films that tell stories that bring characters to some sense of redemption,” he says. “At this phase in my career, I want to make sure the writing is strong and the creative team is top-notch so that I continue to grow, too.” A new adventure looms on the horizon, and we can’t wait to be passengers on that thrilling ride.

Jim Caviezel stands in front of Jetset's plane, rolling up his sleeve.

In a world that often demands compromise, Jim Caviezel reminds us that the route to success need not be charted by sacrificing one’s core values. He’s flying on his own terms, staying true to his course, and reminding us all that, yes, the sky’s the limit—but only if you dare to take off.

Las Vegas, the city that never sleeps, has unveiled its latest secret: The Vault at the Bellagio, a cocktail lounge that’s as elusive as it is exclusive. In a city known for its flashy announcements and over-the-top openings, The Vault chooses subtlety, almost whispering its presence. Here’s a peek into this hidden gem that’s rewriting the rulebook of luxury lounges.

The Entrance: A Secret Only For The Knowing

Picture this: you’re strolling through the Bellagio, one of Vegas’ most opulent hotels. Amid the clinking of slot machines and the dazzle of the casino, you find yourself at the casino cage. Nearby, a doorman stands unassumingly. No grand signage, no loud announcement – just a nod, and you’re in. This isn’t your average Vegas bar; this is The Vault, where exclusivity is the name of the game.

The Vault, once a nondescript office for casino hosts, has been transformed into an intimate alcove of luxury. With only 10 tables and a 50-person capacity, including a cozy 8-seat bar, it’s a world away from the bustling Vegas floor. The main parlor keeps the lights low and music at just the right volume without overwhelming the conversation. The décor screams opulence – gold doors, mohair walls, and an overhead light fixture, spanning nearly 9’ wide, showers a constellation of 80 glowing globes over bartenders dressed so suavely they could moonlight as GQ models. They pour and stir artfully, transforming a drink into an event, a performance, an odyssey.

A Symphony of Spirits: The Art of Mixology

The Vault’s drink menu is an ode to the art of cocktail making. Browsing the drink list is like flipping through the pages of a magazine with large photos dominating full pages. Four “Vintage Cocktails” are made with older out-of-circulation spirits curated through auction houses and private collectors. Each one is listed as “MP” for market price. The Captain’s Sidecar, with its 1930s Remy Martin, transports you back to a World War 1 era favoring the romantic story of an American army captain who invented the drink while serving in Paris during the Great War. Or try the Gold Rush Martinez, a gin-based twist on the Manhattan, featuring Beefeater from the 1950s. It’s not just a drink; it’s a journey through history. Craig Schoettler, Executive Director of Beverage, MGM Resorts International points out, “Now more than ever, visitors are looking for experiences when they travel. At The Vault, the cocktail itself becomes the experience. We offer a very special collection of rare and unique spirits from brands throughout the 20th century, which allows guests to “drink history” and understand exactly how a spirit tasted during a specific time period. Once that vintage is gone, it’s gone forever, which means a guest has the opportunity to discover something new each time they visit.”

A Culinary Companion: Indulgence in Every Bite

Food at The Vault isn’t just an afterthought; it’s a carefully crafted companion to the drinks. Petrossian caviars, with their rich and velvety textures, create a symphony of flavors, especially when paired with their homemade potato chips. The Basque Bikini, a contender for the world’s thinnest grilled cheese, is a testament to culinary innovation. And for the meat lovers, the Japanese A5 Wagyu tenderloin, served either as a steak sandwich or nigiri, is a decadent indulgence. Bellagio Vice President of Food & Beverage, Josef Wagner, encapsulates the visitors’ experience perfectly, “Guests find that it satisfies any rare spirit-collector cravings and provides culinary delights for the most sophisticated foodies”.

In a city where the new and the noisy often take the spotlight, The Vault at the Bellagio is a refreshing change. It’s not about the hype; it’s about the experience – discreet, exclusive, and utterly indulgent. It’s a place where the high standards of a true jetsetter are not just met but exceeded. This is not just a bar; it’s a statement – one that says luxury isn’t always about being the loudest in the room; sometimes, it’s about being the best-kept secret. So, if you’re looking for a taste of the high life, away from the public eye, The Vault at the Bellagio awaits. Just remember, it’s a secret worth keeping.

No other wine region on the planet draws as much attention or visitors as Napa Valley. It’s visited by over five million people every year and there are over 400 amazing wineries to choose from. However, when a winery achieves first-class status, something magical happens, and almost effortlessly, you become engaged in an environment where staff members enjoy greeting people, are genuinely excited about sharing product knowledge and wine education, and are ultimately motivated to make a lasting impression.

Pine Ridge Vineyards, which is celebrating over 40 years in the iconic Stags Leap District, is best known for producing Cabernet Sauvignon. While it’s quite evident their wines are appreciated, the entire experience the winery and its staff provides also leaves its guests wanting to return for more.

In 1978, founder Gary Andrus planted the property’s original namesake vineyard on a steeply-terraced hillside flanked by a dramatic ridgeline of pine trees. He was inspired to grow and produce Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux wines, and his pioneering efforts met with tremendous success as the Bordeaux varietals he planted — Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot — thrived and produced wines of great distinction.

Andrus sold Pine Ridge Vineyards in 2000 and it was purchased by Crimson Wine Group — a company that owns a select portfolio of wineries in California, Oregon and Washington (Pine Ridge is their only Napa-based winery). With a philosophy to embody its history and distinct place of origin, Pine Ridge Vineyards includes five Bordeaux varietals planted across five renowned appellations: Stags Leap District, Howell Mountain, Rutherford, Oakville and Carneros (160 acres of vines in total). Winemaker and General Manager Michael Beaulac has the luxury of working with these unique resources to blend complex wines with structured tannins.

When visiting Pine Ridge Vineyards, guests can indulge in a full array of Signature and Appellation wine tastings. Walk-ins are welcome and tours require reservations. For the ultimate VIP Experience, book the Savor Pine Ridge, a 90-minute intimate tour spread among nearly a mile of caves tunneled deep inside the hillside of the estate. Hosted by wine educators, guests will taste five estate Cabernet Sauvignon wines at Cellar 47 lounge followed with gourmet bites expertly paired and prepared by winery Chef Susan Lassalette. For more information or to book a reservation, contact the concierge at 800-575-9777 or Concierge@PineRidgeWine.com.

The Taste

2015 Fortis -100% sourced from the winery’s estate vineyards in the Stags Leap District, this dynamic Cabernet Sauvignon is an inky-purple color in the glass. The nose is pleasantly aromatic with dark fruits, cassis, vanilla, cedar and spice with lingering notes of espresso. The palate has excellent concentration, with mouth-filling flavors of ripe raspberry, blackberry and black plum, yet it is silky with layers of texture, leading to a lengthy, alluring finish. This wine will continue to age well and possibly evolve for another 12-15+ years.

There are many of us who can appreciate a good bottle of wine and some of us can acknowledge we may feel the same about a great film. I tend to think of wine and filmmaking in a similar way. After all, both can be interpreted as an art form — they just have different forms of expression. But does the art of winemaking come easier to an Oscar-winning filmmaker?

At Inglenook, located in Napa Valley, the art of bringing the right team together to produce extraordinary wine seems to go hand in hand with the filmmaking success of Francis Ford Coppola. Known for iconic films such as the The Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now, Coppola has achieved success on many levels. Although he’s not a winemaker, he’s currently been in the wine business over 40 years; comparable to the 50 years he’s dedicated to filmmaking.

Inglenook, founded in 1879 by Gustave Niebaum, was Napa’s first estate winery. In the 1930s, Niebaum’s grandnephew, John Daniel, Jr., inherited the chateau and vineyards which he ran for twenty years. In 1975, Francis Ford Coppola and his wife, Eleanor, purchased part of the estate which included 1,400 acres and Niebaum’s Victorian home and carriage house. They joined their name with Niebaum’s and the property became the Niebaum-Coppola Estate Winery.

In 1995, the Coppolas purchased the remaining part of the original property, which included the Inglenook Chateau and approximately 90 acres of vineyards. Today, Inglenook remains the largest contiguous estate on the famed Rutherford Bench known for producing Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2011, with a vision of reuniting the historical Inglenook name with its vineyards, Coppola’s intention to honor the estate’s heritage and restore its legacy as America’s greatest wine estate was graciously fulfilled.

Tasting Options

Experiences include tours of the Chateau, the Infinity caves and the vineyards, among many others. Tastings range from $45 – $135 per person and appointments are encouraged. For a full array of tasting options, please visit Inglenook.com.

The Toast

To the Coppola family — here’s to continued success carrying on the Inglenook name and honoring the estate’s unique heritage as well as with your Francis Ford Coppola Winery and Virginia Dare Winery in Geyserville, California, and your most recent venture, the purchase of Domaine de Broglie in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. May your legacy as a vintner be as fruitful as the way your filmmaking has shaped American cinema.

The Taste

2015 Rubicon —This Cabernet with a hint of Merlot is medium-to-full bodied with a deep red, bold, color. Pleasantly aromatic with fresh dark fruits, vanilla and cherries gently combine secondary notes of cloves and cinnamon. Silky on the palate yet delicately balanced to carry this age worthy wine to a delicious lingering finish.

Not every wine will benefit from aging. A bottle made to be opened immediately, as most wines are today, will turn brown and lose all of its fruit character if you cellar it for years. The wines that age best have relatively high levels of tannins and acidity. Most ready-to-drink wines are at their best quality within three to five years of production, although they will stay safe indefinitely if properly stored. Fine wines can retain their quality for many decades.

Speaking of fine wines, Mayacamas has been an iconic name in Napa Valley for decades, producing one of the longest-lived Cabernet Sauvignons in the region. The historic winery, located in the hills of Mount Veeder, rests high on the edge of an extinct volcano’s crater where the demanding environment offers the potential to cultivate exceptional fruit with concentrated flavors.

The latest release of its 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon signifies an extraordinary milestone celebrating 125 years of winemaking for the Mayacamas estate. In 1889, John Fisher, a German immigrant and pickle merchant in San Francisco, initially purchased the rugged mountain land and built the winery still used today. The winery has been carried on by generations of families – Taylor and Travers, among others. The current owners are billionaire entrepreneur Jay Schottenstein and his son Joey.

Since taking over in 2013, they made preserving the Mayacamas legacy and moving the brand into the future a priority. They brought in winemakers Braiden Albrecht and Andy Ericson as well as Phil Coturri to oversee the vineyards. Now, with meticulous restoration of the winery, an experienced team and a renewed focus on the art of winemaking, the Schottenstein’s vision has been successfully fulfilled.

When visiting Mayacamas Vineyards, guests can experience tastings or a private tour. Tours are available Tuesdays through Saturdays for up to six guests and last approximately 90 minutes. Prior reservations are required. Current Release Tour & Tasting: $75 per guest. Library Cabernet Sauvignon Tour & Tasting: $125 per guest.

So here’s a toast to the Schottenstein Family — to continued success producing one of the longest-lived Cabernet Sauvignons in Napa valley as well as one of the oldest continuously operating Napa Valley wineries. May your age-worthy, high-quality wine remain as unique as its storied vineyards and wine operations for years to come.

The Taste

2014 Cabernet Sauvignon — This is a medium-bodied wine with bright raspberry, black cherry, oak and vanilla spices laced with florals. Secondary notes of star anise, cigar and black pepper. Dynamic complexity with good balance, chewy tannins ending with an expressive finish.

Setting out to experience an epic ski adventure in a casual, yet sophisticated family-friendly setting, Jetset’s radar pointed toward a world-class ski resort in the picture-perfect Mountain Village of Telluride, Colorado.

Flying private to Telluride Regional Airport (TEX) can be slightly intimidating as a passenger. It sits atop a plateau and is the highest airport in North America (9,070 foot elevation with a gasping 1,000 foot drop to the San Miguel River below). Only an experienced pilot with the right equipment can handle the elevation and surrounding terrain.

With 43 degrees nipping at our noses and jaw-dropping panoramic views of Wilson’s Peak, the majestic snow-covered San Juan Mountains welcomed our arrival. A glistening blanket of winter guided our scenic, ten-minute drive to The Madeline Hotel and Residences, set in the heart of Mountain Village. Recently acquired by Auberge Resorts Collection, The Madeline is one of only two Four-Diamond hotels in Telluride, with the other being the Lumière Hotel.

Designed with upscale flair that fosters relaxation and adventure, this magical alpine resort features 83 rooms and 71 residences nestled among sweeping mountain views overlooking the historic town of Telluride. With ski-in-ski-out accommodations, a ski valet, full-service spa and salon, fitness center, Sky Terrace and outdoor pool and kids club — the resort has it all. It’s a world-renowned all-season destination for recreation, shopping and festivals.

Accommodations

Spacious, recently-renovated guest rooms, suites and residences are available to accommodate a wide variety of needs. As a family of four, we stayed in a two-bedroom residence catering to privacy for both children and adults. It came complete with a full kitchenette, luxury appliances with washer/dryer, dining table, separate living room and hallway powder room.

Each bedroom featured a luxurious king size pillow-top mattress, heated bathroom floors, granite double-vanity bathroom, separate steam shower and soaking tub. The large balcony overlooked the Sky Terrace pool boasting surreal views of snow-capped mountains, towering spruce trees, the ski lift and snow-covered slopes.

The Ski Experience

With the help of Black Tie Ski Rentals, we were assisted with a personalized boot and ski-fitting session prior to our first day on the slopes. In less than 30 minutes, the four of us were all set. All the equipment we needed would be readily available at Madeline’s Ski Valet the following morning —just steps away from the slopes. What a relief! After all, it’s been 10+ years since we’ve hit the slopes and this was our children’s first ski experience, so convenience was key. Lastly, enrolling the children into ski school was an absolute must. This was easily coordinated through the Telluride Ski Resort. Meeting up with our friendly and knowledgeable ski Instructor, Doug Sanders, brought the fundamentals of skiing back to full circle.

Before long, it was off to the “magic carpet” training on the bunny hills in an effort to shoot for our first ski run of the day! When we got to the first lift, the kids learned the proper way to get on the ski lift and we were off. We did appreciate the smooth transition in the lift line. It was short and sweet and I know this can be a hassle. As we glided up the lift, breathing in the fresh air and enjoying the winter wonderland was exhilarating. And the first ski run was eventful with one 14-year-old speed racer and our 10-year-old snow angel. As a parent, family bonding memories like these last a lifetime, and settings like this make it easy for these memories to last forever.

“Our guests can travel anywhere in the world, and they chose Telluride because of our unique combination of spectacular scenery, unmatched terrain, unspoiled character and warm hospitality,” says Matt Windt, vice president of sales & marketing at Telluride Ski & Golf. “Telluride is truly a one-of-a-kind destination and our guests tell us that they will never forget their first time visiting us. Many of our guests now come back with friends and family, and often buy second or third homes here. It is unlike anywhere in the world.”

Dining

With adult and kid-friendly restaurants around every corner, you won’t have any trouble finding the right place to dine. Here are a few options:

This private retreat was inspired by the Dolomites of Northern Italy and is truly an authentic dining experience.

Boutique Air partners with United Airlines, enabling travelers to book and connect through United’s global network.

There’s nothing like the convenience of private jet travel. When you land at John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Orange County, it’s just a 15-minute drive down the coast to The Resort at Pelican Hill, a world-renowned, 504-acre luxury resort that captures the essence of Italy in Southern California.

From the moment you arrive, you’ll see how the resort’s design was inspired by 16th-century Italian architect Andrea Palladio (1508-1580). Seeking to revive the principles which underpinned ancient Roman architecture, he stressed the importance of proportion and symmetry and the correct use of the classical orders.

You’ll marvel over the expansive Palladian-inspired architecture and timeless setting which looks as though it’s been there for ages. From roof tiles that replicate those on Italian buildings to courtyards with flowing fountains to lush Mediterranean landscaping and archways that frame picturesque coastal scenes, Italy has been reborn here.

The lobby’s massive, 28-foot rotunda emphasizes grand proportions and perfect symmetry. Just outside the lobby doors, the balcony lures guests to pristine golf course views nestled against the endless grandeur of a mesmerizing ocean backdrop.

“Beyond beautiful weather and photo-worthy sunsets, guests can expect memorable experiences, tailored to their preferences and priorities. Our approach is anticipatory and personalized, so that each guest enjoys their desired amount of adventure, relaxation or even a mix of both!” says Kate Starr, director of public relations.

Within walking distance from the lobby is The Coliseum Pool, measuring 136 feet in diameter that was built with 1.1 million mosaic glass tiles cut and laid by hand. It’s eloquently displayed between private cabanas and tiered decks offering expansive golf course and ocean views.

Whether you’re planning a business trip or family vacation, Pelican Hill offers a variety of accommodations, including Bungalows that feature spacious guest rooms with luxury amenities.

There are also private two- to four-bedroom Villas that include one- to two-car garages. This just may be your next home away from home. Villas come complete with a gourmet kitchens, a great room concept with 50-60” flat-screen television, luxury bedding and spacious bathrooms featuring a marble walk-in shower and deep soaking tubs. You can also arrange for a personal concierge, butler and cook upon request. If you’re parents on date night, your children will enjoy Camp Pelican with two age-appropriate youth programs providing an entertaining resort vacation on their own terms.

When it’s time to become one with mind, body and spirit, you can escape to the The Spa at Pelican Hill. Upon your arrival, you’ll find a grand-scale rotunda that opens to the soothing sights and sounds of an elaborate water feature. Before or after your service, be sure to visit Acqua Colonnade to enjoy the sauna, steam room or roman soaking pools.

If a round of golf is on your agenda, the ocean views from nearly every hole of both Tom Fazio-designed 18-hole golf courses (Ocean North and Ocean South) will impress you. These pristine courses cover 400 acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean and are in a league of their own — ranked among the best in the country.

For dining, there are a variety of options designed for al fresco seating on heated ocean-view terraces. Andrea, the resort’s signature restaurant, offers fresh, authentic Italian dishes. An ideal dish to try is the signature risotto prepared tableside. The Coliseum Grill is geared toward casual poolside dining and Pelican Grill offers Napa-inspired cuisine. Piccolo, available exclusively to resort guests, offers a globally-inspired menu of Tapas-style portions. And for those on the go, Caffè & Market offers gourmet food and wine to go along with gelato and espresso.

Over 400 wineries are nestled in Napa Valley. For many of us, discovering what sets them apart is the journey every wine aficionado can appreciate. With some wineries less sophisticated than others, those that get it right understand that the quality of grapes produced in the vineyards requires the utmost attention to detail, thus creating a style and taste that can’t be duplicated. It’s the passion behind the winery that brings winemaking to the next level.

Which takes us to the world-renowned Trefethen Family Vineyards, celebrating its 50th anniversary as one of the few remaining family-owned wine estates committed to the craft of 100 percent estate-grown wines in the Oak Knoll District. And just like the preservation of fine wine, preserving the history behind the winery and vineyards, as well as aiding in the foundation of what Napa Valley is today, was and is most certainly part of the business plan for the Trefethen family legacy.

Dating back over 130 years ago, during Napa’s first era of viticulture and winemaking, the Goodman brothers established Eshcol Ranch and constructed a three-story wooden gravity-flow winery designed by architect Hamden McIntyre. (It’s known today as the McIntyre building). The winemaking success of the Goodman brothers helped the boom in Napa and ended after the phylloxera parasite epidemic and Prohibition.

The McIntyre building and several adjoining farms were purchased by Eugene and Catherine Trefethen in 1968 with the idea of selling grapes, not to start a winery. However, their son John and daughter-in-law Janet wanted to make wine. With much thought and consideration, the building was restored twice, initially after the purchase in 1968 and then following the 2014 earthquake. The recent renovation was completed in 2017 and the doors opened to yet another remarkable new beginning. The McIntyre building remains as the heart of the winery. The first floor is still used to age wine while the second floor houses a tasting area with mesmerizing views of the vineyards.

When visiting Trefethen Vineyards, guests have a variety of ways to sample wine. Distinct flights are available daily along with the option to enjoy a two-hour Historic Winery Tour. For those who prefer a reserve tasting experience, with advance reservations, guests will be escorted to the former family home to experience a flight of Trefethen’s most highly-allocated estate-grown wines.

So here’s a toast to the Trefethen Family — to continued success as you begin to pass the torch to the next generation, your children, Hailey and Lorenzo Trefethen, as one of the most respected Napa Valley estates producing world-class wines.

The Taste

2014 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon — This cab is a full-bodied wine that shines at the nose with an explosive bouquet of plum, cherry and spice with notes of clove, licorice and black pepper. Succulent blackberry fruit soak the pallet with grippy tannins ending with a delightful finish.

We often reach for a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon because of its serious palate power. It’s known to be full bodied, dry with dark fruits, combined with hints of vanilla and savory notes of complexity. Personally, cabs are one of my favorite red wines and not only are they the perfect way to de-stress, most reds are loaded with antioxidants, and in moderation, not viewed as a guilty pleasure. At least that’s what I tell myself and I will remain a firm believer.

The background on a well-made wine is often quite interesting. Mt. Brave Cabernet Sauvignon, in particular, has a history that dates back to the original vineyard purchase in 1841 – before the Gold Rush and the Civil War. It is a tribute to the pioneering spirit of those who settled the rugged terrain during the 1800s and an homage to the native Wappos, “the brave ones,” who originally endured the labors of this extraordinary place.

The vineyard itself sits high atop Mt. Veeder at an elevation of 1,400 to 1,800 feet, which plays a vital role in the wine making process. It is labor intensive, and water retention becomes a challenge on steep slopes, but the vines take advantage of this struggle and produce concentrated flavors.

Mt. Brave is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Harvest dates were September 16th-October 15th. Aged 19 months in French oak barrels (89 percent new) with case production at 4,857 and a proposition to shine a light on Mt. Veeder without producing overt tannins, the 2014 Mt. Brave vintage solidified that endeavor.

The Taste
Mt. Brave presented itself with a deep, vibrant red color. The nose carried explosive, aromatic notes of floral, dark and red berries, plum, spice and oak. Hints of stone, espresso and tobacco tangoed together with layers of complexity at its peak of freshness. It is well balanced with good tannic structure, mild acidity with a delightful, lingering finish. This wine would be paired well with a juicy fillet.
